"Shia" means someone who follows Imam Ali [a]. This means a person does not become a Shia by words alone, nor by talking. A person does not become a Shia simply by love or interest. So, how does one become a Shia? By following — following means to accompany someone. When that person moves forward, you follow from behind and stay with them. This is what it means "to follow." A Shia of Ali is someone who follows Imam Ali’s [a] actions.

Visiting the Graves of the Deceased
Visit [the graves of] your deceased ones for indeed they rejoice at your visit. One should ask for one’s request at the graves of one’s father and mother after praying for them.

I saw an elderly man sleeping on the cold ground in an alley. As a young person, I didn’t have anything to offer him. That night, I became uncomfortable within my own clothes, bed, and sleep. The image of the old man occupied my thoughts, and I couldn’t sleep. In an attempt to share in his suffering, I decided to forgo my mattress and bedding and sleep on the cold ground. Although the cold eventually made me ill, I found a profound sense of inner peace. My soul was healed. What a pleasurable sickness!
