? Take Back Water seeks a specific outcome, the re-nationalisation of the water industry. We’re happy to extend our chat groups to Take Back Water, and wish the campaign well and look forward to its engagement with the public.

? Dirty Water’s stance, however, is that it is not for us to advocate a particular solution but to champion the rights of a Citizens’ Assembly to make that call, in line with XR’s third and Central Demand. That is why Dirty Water Wave 6 is focused on delivering a Citizens’ Assembly on Water.

? How water is managed is properly a concern for all of us, but must be determined in the context of how a fit-for-purpose infrastructure is funded and delivered, how we conserve water and how services are to be regulated effectively. Not forgetting the management of agricultural, industrial and refuse disposal impacts on water in the environment, together with reinforcing responsible land use and flood mitigation.

? Ultimately, selection has to be from a complete range of management options not mediated by us. For instance, Scottish Water has always been publicly owned but offers as poor a service as the English privatised companies. We’re still supportive of the TBW campaign, however, we would welcome a bit more nuance in the proposition for such a complex subject.

? It will be great if we can align all our efforts and find a way to work together.

SICK OF SEWAGE?

Demonstration outside the United Utilities AGM

10am, Fri 19 July

Lingley Mere Business Park, Lingley Green Avenue, Great Sankey, Warrington WA5 3LP

United Utilities were one of the worst water company for sewage discharges in 2023, responsible for over 656,000 hours of untreated sewage pouring into our waterways! 

Polluting pays: in 2023 United Utilities declared a profit of £441 million and paid out £301 million in dividends!

Join outraged members of the public, wild swimmers, anglers, boaters and environmental groups outside United Utilities for their AGM from 10am - AGM starts at 11am - outside Lingley Mere Business Park.

This venue is not easily accessible by public transport. Therefore, we are car-pooling. Meet at 9:45 at Great Sankey Leisure Centre, Lingley Green Ave WA5 3AA

From there it is a 7-minute level walk.

This will be a peaceful protest. 

Bring your personal messages for shareholders and board members to see as they make their way into the building. Go simple with a placard or get as creative as you like - think poo / river / fish costumes / banners / swimwear / hazmat suits / fake poo props or even bring a toilet to sit on!

Please let us know if you/your group have any creative ideas/theatrics/speaches, etc. you would be happy to include in the demonstration.

Let’s make a splash and continue to pile the pressure on United Utilities.

We will be delivering a written demand to United Utilities that they stop polluting our waterways and don’t push the costs of fixing their decades of mismanagement and profiteering onto customers.

£60 billion of debt, £56 billion paid out to shareholders. Billions of litres of raw sewage pumped into our waterways. The historical failure of privatisation is clear to all, amidst the crisis the water industry faces, there is no better time for a national movement to win public ownership.

With Thames Water on the brink of collapse, we have a once in a generation opportunity to win public ownership by the public. We are planning a campaign for mass non-payment as the only viable and legitimate form of action to put an end to this mess of billions of litres of sewage pumped into rivers and seas, the use of water as a financialised commodity and our rising bills forcing us to pay for their profits.

The demand for public ownership is high but it’s only effective if we build the leverage. By building the threat of non-payment, we have an opportunity to win our demand.

We think that power can be built from below, but we need your help to do it!
