This PhD project will support The Compound Semiconductor (CS) Manufacturing Hub for a Sustainable Future, based at Sheffield University Management School, led by Professor Lenny Koh. The Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub for a Sustainable Future is 1 of 5 new hubs aiming to address the challenge of commercialising early-stage research within key areas of manufacturing funded by EPSRC and industry and launched in May 2024. In addition to being part of the research community at University of Sheffield, the researcher will join the CS Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) community and will work closely with the Post Doctoral Research Fellow in the CS Hub. The CS hub aims to capitalise on the huge opportunity of compound semiconductor manufacturing, as identified in the UK’s national semiconductor strategy. Researchers will develop energy-efficient opto-electronics for use in key emerging technologies such as quantum. We will expand on the environmental benefits of compound semiconductors by creating new devices such as mercury-free ‘night vision’ mid-infrared detector arrays and devices that both communicate and illuminate based on integrated transistors and LEDs.The CS Hub is led from Cardiff University, with spokes at the University of Cambridge, University of Manchester, University of Sheffield, and University College London. We have >30 industrial partners participating in the CS Hub by providing resources, time and expertise.We also have strong links with colleagues in other Hubs, particularly the Future Advanced Metrology Hub and the Future Photonics Hub. These links support and complement our CS research, and facilitate larger investments for promising, cross-cutting feasibility studies.

The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE) is offering a PhD research scholarship, to examine the effects of phosphorus (P) × CO2 interactions on below-ground responses of forest ecosystems. The project will leverage new mechanistic knowledge in models of the global carbon cycle and its responses to climate change and rising CO2. Rising atmospheric CO2 poses a potential for significant changes to forest functioning in the future. The world's first ever mature forest free-air CO2 enrichment experiment, EucFACE, has continued over the past twelve years with the critical nutrient P identified as key to our understanding of forest responses to elevated CO2.To directly address how P interacts with elevated CO2, we are seeking a highly-motivated candidate in the field of global change ecology and biogeochemistry for a 3-year PhD program of research to commence in 2025. The successful candidate will conduct research in the EucFACE experiment at WSU Hawkesbury Campus to investigate soil processes altered by P addition in combination with elevated CO2. This work will support and interact with simulation modelling work by our project team to help close the gap on P × CO2 interactions in forest ecosystems. The student will undertake measurements and data analysis based on the response of the mature eucalypt forest ecosystem to experimental manipulation. They will work with an ecosystem process model to explore the mechanistic basis for the responses observed.

Despite large forthcoming investments in nature repair, significant knowledge gaps remain about how to maximise climate resilience in ecological restoration. Increasing chronic and acute stresses associated with climate change are pushing plants beyond their physiological thresholds, with implications for the success of large-scale restoration happening now. Understanding the adaptive capacity of key plant species provides an opportunity to enhance the climate resilience of restoration plantings.This PhD project will investigate whether seed sourced from future climate analogue sites can perform better than local seed under current and future climate conditions (warming and decreased rainfall). The project aims to examine the establishment, performance, and function of a diverse array of ground cover species directly seeded into restoration plots in threatened grassy woodlands. The research findings will inform strategic restoration approaches to improve long-term biodiversity outcomes.

The work will be part of the project "Combining ROot contrasted Phenotypes for more resilient agro ecosystems" (CROP) funded within the program of the German Ministry for Education and Science (BMBF) “Plant roots and soil ecosystems: Importance of the rhizosphere for the bioeconomy” in the framework of the “National Research Strategy Bioeconomy 2030”. In collaboration with the University, the project aims to assess the beneficial effects of cultivar mixtures with complementary root phenotypes within an agricultural field. Wwe evaluate the benefits of the cropping system in terms of water, carbon and nitrogen fluxes, microbial communities and yield. We use complementary experimental methods and modeling to achieve this goal. Your work will build on the process-based soil-rhizosphere-plant model developed in the first phase of CROP which integrates a 3D functional-structural approach (CPlantBox) to mechanistically simulate plant growth, plant-soil interactions and the rhizosphere microbiome. You will contribute to extend and apply the modeling approach for calculating water, carbon and nitrogen fluxes in the plant and soil to evaluate nitrogen use efficiency and drought resistance at critical stages of plant development. You will work in an interdisciplinary team with postdoctoral researchers from Jülich and Hohenheim.
