⏳PhD Students - How to overcome procrastination or delaying things?

Procrastination is quite common among PhD students.

This leads to wastage of a lot of useful time.

9 reasons for procrastination and how to avoid it.

📍𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Many students keep reading and listening to good ideas. Examples include applying for a research internship & volunteering at a conference. However, all these ideas sum up in the head and hardly any of them are put into action. Be 20% thinking and 80% action person.

📍𝐍𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞: Several students follow an abrupt way of spending their day. They randomly do things that come their way. A better way is to write down (on your phone) as bullet points the tasks you plan to work on the day. This way you will at least set a daily target for yourself.

📍𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: Some people are very easy to be distracted. Anything that pops up will take away their focus. Eventually, they say – okay, I’ll do it tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes, now is the best time to act. Work on yourself and how you can fight against distractions.

📍𝐈𝐭’s 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭: Taking the first step is always difficult even scary at times. It’s the place where many people give up. Everything is difficult before you do it, just go for it. Take the first step and you will realize that the rest of the journey is not as difficult as you imagine.

📍𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬: Many times you rely on others to do certain things. For example, expect feedback from someone on your resume or cover letter. If it goes beyond a certain limit, it becomes an unnecessary delay. Wait for some time, remind, and even if it’s still not there, go ahead – find another way.

📍𝐀𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: There is no such thing as perfection. Aiming for it might take you nowhere. Give it your 100% and then take the next step. Don’t wait for an eternity to make it perfect.

📍𝐈’𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝: Perhaps, one of the best reasons to procrastinate. It hardly works because there turns out to be many other things to do on weekend. Furthermore, the thinking ‘it’s the weekend, why should I work?' comes in the middle too. Eventually, it doesn’t happen.

📍𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭: Offering oneself an excuse that I am not an expert in it also takes people back from acting. It’s not possible to know everything anyway. However, it’s possible to learn what is needed. The Internet is the place where you can almost anything.

📍𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞: All successful and unsuccessful people have the same 24 hours a day. It depends upon how one utilizes the time. Perhaps, it might not be as time-consuming as you might think in the first place. Give it a shot.
