BENEFIT: The Adverse Impact of Greek Philosophy on Islamic Creed

Sheikh ’Uthaymīn rahimahullah states:

"One of the greatest causes of Ta'teel (negation of Allāh's Attributes) that befell this Ummah was due to the Greek books which were Arabised by Al-Ma'mūn. For this reason, Sheikh Al-Islam said: "I do not think that Allāh would forgive Al-Ma'mūn for the corruption in creed that he brought upon the Ummah." The true calamity lay in the works he presented from Greek philosophy, to the extent that it was said he would weigh a book in gold—placing gold on one side of the scale and the book on the other—then hand its author the equivalent weight in gold, out of his eagerness to translate Greek texts. However, these works brought great harm to the Ummah. You are also aware that the ordeal faced by Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal was inflicted upon him by none other than Al-Ma'mūn.

BENEFIT: Prolonging the final prostration is not from the Sunnah

Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen (may Allāh have mercy on him) said:

Prolonging the final prostration is not from the Sunnah, as the Sunnah is to maintain consistency in the duration of the various acts of prayer—such as bowing, rising from it, prostration, and sitting between the two prostrations. This is supported by the statement of Al-Barā' ibn ‘Āzib (may Allāh be pleased with him), who said: ‘I observed the prayer with the Prophet ﷺ and found that his standing, bowing, prostration, and sitting between the two prostrations were nearly equal in length.’ This is what is preferable.

However, there is another place designated for supplication besides prostration, which is during the Tashahhud. When the Prophet ﷺ taught ‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd the Tashahhud, he said: ‘Then let one of you choose whatever supplication he wishes.’ Therefore, supplication—whether brief or extensive—should be made after the final Tashahhud, before concluding the prayer with Salām.

BENEFIT 241: Enquiring why Allah legislates certain things

Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymīn rahimahullah said:

"Know, O questioner, and let everyone who listens to this programme know that the reason behind the Sharī‘ah rulings for every believer is that it is based on the statement of Allah and His Messenger, as Allah Almighty says:
﴿وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ وَلا مُؤْمِنَةٍ إِذَا قَضَى اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَمْراً أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُمْ الْخِيَرَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ﴾
"It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any choice in their affair."

Therefore, if someone asks us about the obligation or prohibition of something whose ruling is indicated by the Qur'ān and Sunnah, we respond that the reason is the statement of Allah Almighty or His Messenger ﷺ. THIS REASON IS SUFFICIENT FOR EVERY BELIEVER. This is why when A'ishah was asked why menstruating women are required to make up missed fasts but not prayers, she replied,
((كان يصيبنا ذلك فنؤمر بقضاء الصوم ولا نؤمر بقضاء الصلاة))
"That would affect us, and we were commanded to make up the fasts but not the prayers." That is because a text from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, peace be upon him, serves as a compelling reason for every believer.

However, there is no harm in seeking out the wisdom behind Allah's rulings, as doing so:

1. increases one's tranquility,

2. highlights the excellence of Islamic law by linking rulings with their reasons, and

3. enables one to make analogies when the reason for a specific ruling also applies to another matter not explicitly mentioned.

Thus, understanding the wisdom behind legal rulings has these three benefits."

عملا بقوله تعالى: ﴿وأما بنعمة ربك فحدث﴾

The Irish man who attended Sheikh Saleem's lecture on Thursday [15 Dhul Qa'dah 1445 H (23/05/23)] has embraced Islam. May Allāh grant him steadfastness.

Similarly, two young men embraced Islam during the Saturday conference in East London. May Allāh keep them steadfast.

Today, Sheikh Saleem will be delivering his final lecture at masjid Muqbil after Maghrib In Shā Allāh. The masjid will be open for brothers, while sisters will be in the unit. We encourage everyone to attend and benefit from this final gathering.

Clarification:

Today [20 Dhul Qa'dah 1445 H (28/05/24)], Sheikh Saleem Al-Hilali حفظه الله was asked the following question (paraphrasing):

Question: Is it permissible for a taxi driver to carry passengers to forbidden destinations, and is it permissible for him to carry female passengers?

Answer: It is not permissible to carry passengers to forbidden destinations. As for female passengers, it is permissible for him to transport them within the city so long as he lowers his gaze and the interior of the car is visible to onlookers.

Upon the advice of Sheikh Saleem ḥafidhahullāh, this is a short clarification regarding the above answer:

After the Q&A session, Abu Atiyyah Mahmud حفظه الله enquired further regarding the above answer. The Sheikh responded by saying:

1- I based my answer on the reality in my country (Jordan).

2- The Fatwa was general. As for the specific details which may affect the ruling, this would require a separate ruling.

Eg. If one fears fitna for himself, he must not carry a female passenger.

Eg. If he drives at times/places where nobody is present, this is not permissible.

3- If a scholar's fatwa is incorrect, it does not make the matter permissible.

4- You are more aware of the situation, so feel free to clarify whatever you believe requires further clarification.

This is an issue "no two people disagree on, nor do two goats butt heads over it."

This proverbial expression is used for a matter that is clear and undisputed.

Example:

Sheikh Saleem Al-Hilali ḥafidhahullāh said in last night's lecture:

«الذي يضع الرأي العام في هذا الزمان هو الإعلام. وهذا واضح جلي لا يختلف فيه اثنان ولا ينتطح فيه عنزان، لا سيما في الغرب».

"Public opinion in this era is shaped by the media. This is an evident fact
لاَ يَخْتَلِفُ فِيهِ اثْنَانِ وَلاَ يَنْتَطِحُ فِيهِ عَنْزَانِ
particularly in the West."
