🎵📻 Why I Absolutely Love Music From The Soviet Union 🗣️🎙️
As an American in Russia, my adoration for a culture considered to be nothing more than a phantom of a bygone era by Russia's younger generations is often met with a mixture of surprise and humorous confusion.
For many young Russians, songs like (How young we once were) and Наша судьба (Our destiny) carry with it only an association with grandma's old records and grandpa's bookshelf of accordion songbooks.
But as someone looking at another country's rich history from the outside, these compositions are so much more than just echos of the past.
They are the very manifestations of the values and hopes that entire generations held dear in their hearts along the road of life - from their emergence out of infancy into the world to their eventual touch-down into old age.
What's more, their values, which eternally live on through the music they enjoyed throughout their lives, are not only so foreign to the world we now live in, but in my opinion superior to those encapsulated in most modern music.
Take, for example, these verses of the first song I mentioned -
Back then, we were greeted without smiles
All the flowers on Earth's roads...
We forgave our friends for their mistakes,
But we could not forgive betrayal.*
We already played through the first half
And we only managed to understand one thing:
If you don't went to get lost on Earth,
You must do your best not to lose yourself!*
In only a few lines of one song, you can find such profound insight into the way Soviet people related to their past, the way they viewed friendships and relations between people, their perspectives on forgiveness and loyalty, their conceptualization of themselves in the context of the world.
They were a people who, in general, took principles such as comradery, loyalty, and their relation to existence in general very seriously. They reflected on concepts like these often.
Here are a couple verses from Наша Судьба (Our Destiny)
We grew up early,
But youth rages in our hearts,
And the sky of dreams is high,
It turns blue in our earthly eyes.
We believe in our immortality,
When we get tired of fighting,
Others will come to replace us,
Younger and better than us.
Again, here we understand the value Soviet people attributed to their legacy, the importance they attached to their dreams, and the understanding they had of youth's significance.
For me, these songs are not just compositions by which older Russians reminisce about days of old, but roadmaps of how a specific people lived their lives during a specific period in history.
But, perhaps more importantly for newer generations, they are road signs we can use to understand whether or not what we have come to value are really things that allow us to live life to the fullest.
