He was an Italian hermit monk. He came from a family of the Venetian aristocracy. He left his wealth to the poor to end his life in poverty. This is why he also called “the Father of the Poor.” He lived as a hermit in a monastery and refused to join the community or become abbot. He is also known for helping poor people during a flood. After his death, it was discovered that he wore sackcloth under his clothes as a form of sacrifice and penance.

SAINT THOMAS AND THE AZTECS

There is a theory, supported by some Catholic and Protestant scholars, that says that the Apostle Thomas was able to reach the Americas and was able to preach to the Aztecs. This is founded on the fact that the Aztec religion believed in one God with three persons and in a primordial flood. The Aztecs also had a deity named Quetzalcoatl who was born of the spirit of a deity and a human virgin, who preached peace and forgiveness, who was persecuted and killed by the other deities, who rose from the dead, and who promised to return one day. This theory, however, has not been proven true nor supported by the Church.
