🇰🇷 Aiki-Tour Notes: South Korea. Part 14.
After several days of intensive training, students are beginning to truly immerse themselves in the rhythm. But it’s not as easy as it might seem—our usual training pace, even with familiar techniques, requires more effort in these conditions. A student grows stronger not only physically but by learning to sustain their technique under any circumstances. In the dojo, we provide ideal conditions: soft mats, good lighting, quiet, and the presence of the sensei nearby. But crises often come unannounced, so students must learn to face challenges in unfamiliar situations.
Training in South Korea is no exception. Not only are we far from home, but our schedule with the sensei has also shifted to 24/7. With classmates constantly nearby, little time for solitude, and a new environment, the mental load increases. The mind continuously processes new information and experiences, which makes familiar techniques demand even more focus. This challenge reveals what a student has truly mastered and what still requires work.
After the morning session, we decided to explore more of the park that had become our training ground. It turned out to be much larger than we initially thought, with hidden corners unfolding before us. The park features a fountain complex, though it was turned off for the season. We continued walking, reading signs with a translator, and found that one of the lawns encouraged visitors to take a break from the city bustle—and there’s even a “blue path” that appears only at certain times. We also found a trail leading to a “children's forest,” with a beautiful bridge and a rocky stream bed that likely fills with water when the fountain is on.
At one point, a woman overheard us talking and approached. She introduced herself as a biology teacher who had just finished a class for children being led away by their caregivers. She offered us a small lesson and took us to a wooden-roofed area where she showed us various local insects kept in special containers. The kids could not only look at photos but observe living insects up close! Among her collection was a giant stag beetle, burrowing with its large pincers. This day turned out to be a real gift, filled with training, unexpected encounters, and discoveries!
Later that evening, we returned to the park to find the mysterious blue path—and it was worth it! The setting was both beautiful and cozy.
