Day 4 - Task 2

Topic:

*Nowadays, people have adopted an unhealthy lifestyle.

Why do think this is?
How could this problem be solved?*

Essay:

*Although the recent developments in medicine, food production, and many other aspects of our lives have dramatically improved public health, many people are still found to follow an unhealthy lifestyle. This has been caused by changes in social and work environment and should be dealt with on both the individual and governmental levels.

Modern people show an inclination towards living unhealthily for various reasons, and probably the most common one is the changing work atmosphere. Increased competition at work means that modern employees have to meet much higher expectations if they want to retain their jobs. Because of this, they have to work overtime to tackle the massive workload, which results in dangerously high level of stress. In such conditions, it is only reasonable to expect these workers to settle for smoking, drinking, or overeating, all in an attempt to alleviate the accumulated stress.

Some may argue that people can simply turn down high-stress jobs and avoid any subsequent health problems. However, in many cases, this is not possible given how fast the cost of living is increasing in the current economic conditions. Many jobs do not provide enough money to live comfortably, so people have to either work several jobs at a time to earn a decent living or, at the other extreme, minimise their expenses to live off on a single salary. In both cases, people sacrifice their physical and mental health simply to survive.

Resolving this growing issue will require a collective effort of both individuals and governments. Individual people can easily improve their general health by adopting some healthy habits, which can be as simple as regular medical check-ups or morning exercises. Surely, these steps cannot possibly solve the entire issue by themselves, nor can they bring any noticeable results in the short run, but it is the change in a person’s mentality that makes a sizeable contribution to their health. People just need to believe that leading a healthy lifestyle is not a complicated task, which will help them start changing their lives to the better.

Governments, in turn, should introduce special policies that will encourage – and even force – their people to lead a healthy life. One option can be to introduce mandatory lunch breaks at work to allow people to have a nourishing meal and have the much-needed rest from work. Governments can go even further and oblige companies to provide their staff with free or at least affordably priced canteens so that the financial condition of a person does not prevent them from living healthily. Regardless of what steps are taken to solve the issue, this should be done quickly because public well-being always has to be the top priority for any government.

In conclusion, many people live unhealthily today because they suffer from work-related stress, which oftentimes cannot be avoided as they have to work a lot to afford the increasing living costs. Ordinary people and governments should both contribute their own part into solving this growing issue.*
