??Hey, are you ready for the next session of the Phileo Sophia speaking club?
?♂?♂?♂Meet our next guest speaker Muhammad, Freshman at NYU Shanghai**?*, double majoring in Business & Finance and Data Science.
Apart from that, he is Philosophy enthusiast. So, don't miss, it will be incredibly interesting ?***
Topic: Psychology of decision making and biases
Time: Wednesday , 8pm (Tashkent, GMT+5)
No politics but Philosophy:
I have been inactive on this channel for a very long time.
It is mainly because I have been dealing with college transition, visa and travel process, project management and also me not being so sure about Social Science, politics in particular.
I haven’t declared my major yet, but it is probably double major in Business&Finance and Data science. To my surprise, Those are the best taught majors alongside with IMA and CS at our campus. But we have core curriculum courses which specialize us into writing, philosophy and critical skills. I will post about them later.
The message that I want to convey to you now is that I will not pursue politics. At least this is what I think about my career right now.
“We have met the enemy and he is us”
? Think critically, Think freely!
? Socrates' quote, "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing," is a call to humility and open-mindedness. He believed that true knowledge requires acknowledging the limitations of one's understanding and being willing to question one's beliefs and assumptions. This echoes Nietzsche's quote, "No one can construct for you the bridge upon which precisely you must cross the stream of life. No one but you yourself ALONE." The emphasis of them are about taking personal responsibility for one's understanding and experiences, rather than relying on external sources.
Confucius' quote, "The man who says he can and the man who says he cannot are both correct," highlights the power of self-belief and the importance of confidence in achieving one's goals. This idea can be reflected by Epictetus' quote, "If you find yourself acting to impress others or avoiding action out of fear of what they might think, you have left the path." As both quotes encapsulate the importance of self-awareness in achieving success and fulfillment.
Aristotle's quote, "Be a free thinker and don't accept everything you hear as truth. Be critical and evaluate what you believe in," is a call to critical thinking and intellectual independence. Aristotle believed that individuals should actively engage with ideas and arguments, rather than passively accepting what they are told. This is also reflected as "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."
?** These quotes are all interconnected by focusing on the importance of individual thought, self-awareness, and critical thinking in the pursuit of wisdom and self-improvement.
Nietzsche's Rules for Writing with Style.
The way he writes is probably the peak of concision and the ultimate satisfaction a human being can reach.

Nietzsche’s 10 Rules for Writing with Style

? Nietzschean midnight
"I know of no better life purpose than to perish in attempting the great and impossible."
Friedrich Nietzsche
Nietzsche highly valued greatness and the pursuit of it. He was also aware that when one has everything as desired, they will be unhappy so one must continue to strive for greatness. 'Greatness' is also not a tangible goal and so one can spend their entire lives in the chasing of it; therefore it is inevitable that one will die in the pursuit of it.
"The secret of realizing the greatest fruitfulness and the greatest enjoyment of existence is: to live dangerously! Build your cities on the slopes of Vesuvius! Send your ships out into uncharted seas! Live in conflict with your equals and with yourselves! Be robbers and ravagers as soon as you ca not be rulers and owners, you men of knowledge! The time will soon past when you could be content to live concealed int he woods like timid deer!"
To step out of the known and into the unknown. To move into chaos from order. It’s the only way we can make purposeful, legitimate progress. The fact that something seems impossible should not be a reason to not pursue it, that's exactly what makes it worth pursuing.
Where would the courage and greatness be if success was certain and there was no risk? The only true failure is shrinking away from life's challenges.
Life only has meaning if you give it meaning, the greatest meaning is to pursue a task so great that it withers your body but hardens your soul. The final act will seal your value hermetically.
“Who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?” -Hunter S. Thompson
One deep quote that encapsulates a fundamental aspect of philosophy is:
"The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates.
It is attributed to Socrates, one of the most famous philosophers in history. He is considered to be the father of Western philosophy, and his ideas have had a profound impact on the development of Western thought and beyond.
The quote is saying that true wisdom is not in knowing everything, but in recognizing that there is always more to learn and understand. This is an important concept in philosophy, as it emphasizes the importance of humility and a willingness to question one's own beliefs and understanding. Socrates was known for his method of questioning (Socratic method), which he used to challenge the assumptions and beliefs of others.
In this way, Socrates is emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and self-reflection in the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. By recognizing that we do not know everything, but realize that there is always room for improvement we open ourselves up to the possibility of learning and growing. It is only when we understand the limits of our own knowledge that we can truly begin to seek out new information and understanding.
In addition, this quote also highlights the idea that true wisdom is not only the knowledge of facts but also the awareness of the limits of human knowledge, and the humility to admit the same. Such an attitude is crucial for an open-minded and rational approach to life, and for growth and progress in any field of knowledge.
Socrates' quote is a reminder that true wisdom is not about having all the answers, but about remaining humble in the face of uncertainty and recognizing the infinite nature of knowledge and the importance of a lifelong pursuit of understanding.
As the saying goes:
Smart people learn from everything and everyone,
Average people learn from their experiences,
Stupid people already have all the answers.
Philosophy
Philosophy is a branch of study that explores the nature of reality, existence, knowledge, ethics, and other related topics. It is a broad field that encompasses various subdisciplines.
There are many different types of philosophy including:
- Metaphysics: the study of the nature of reality and existence.
- Epistemology: the study of knowledge and belief.
- Logic: the study of reasoning and argumentation.
- Ethics: the study of moral principles and values.
- Aesthetics: the study of beauty and taste.
- Political philosophy: the study of government and politics.
- Philosophy of science: the study of the methodology and foundations of science.
- Philosophy of religion: the study of the nature and existence of God and other religious concepts.
There are also many different philosophical theories, including:
- Idealism: the belief that reality is ultimately mental or spiritual in nature.
- Realism: the belief that external objects have an existence independent of perception.
- Pragmatism: the belief that the meaning of an idea or theory is determined by its practical success.
- Existentialism: the belief that individuals are free and responsible for creating their own meaning in life.
- Objectivism: the belief that reason and objective reality are the ultimate sources of knowledge.
- Nihilism: the belief that life is without objective meaning or purpose.
- Empiricism: the belief that knowledge comes primarily from sense experience.
- Rationalism: the belief that knowledge comes primarily from reason and intuition.
- Determinism: the belief that all events in the universe, including human decisions and actions, are causally inevitable.
- Monism: belief that states either that there is ultimately only one thing, or only one kind of thing
P.S. There are many more theories to cover, which is essential in making you and me literate in the World of Philosophy. I will make this the goal of my future posts.
Philosophy and Politics
Philosophy and politics are closely related, as both deal with understanding and shaping human society and behavior. Studying philosophy can help individuals gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles and ideas that underlie political systems and ideologies, as well as develop critical thinking skills that are essential for analyzing and evaluating political arguments and policies. Additionally, many key concepts and theories in political science have roots in philosophy, such as the social contract theory, which was first developed by philosophers like Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Overall, studying philosophy can provide valuable perspective and insight into political issues and decision making.
