Republicans opposed the bill because it codified an open border and weakened the authority of a future President who actually wants a secure border.

Dems were only looking for political cover, how else do you explain this Schumer quote:

“We were playing chess, they were playing checkers … we also end up in much better shape on the border than we were three months ago.”
