“This world is like a jar filled with honey. Flies discover it and approach it. Some of them settled on the edge of the jar and began to consume the honey until they were satisfied, then they flew away. Others, driven by greed, threw themselves into the midst of the honey. Their immersion in it didn't give them the opportunity to enjoy it for long before they drowned in the middle of it.”

Sad Ibn Abi Waqqas رضي الله عنه said:

“I was a man who was dutiful to my mother, but when I became Muslim, she said: ‘O Sad, what is this new thing I see you upon? Leave this religion of yours or I will not eat or drink until I die and people will shame on you for what you have done to me and they will say that you have killed your mother.’ I said: ‘Do not do that, O mother, for I will not give up this religion of mine for anything.’ She stayed without eating for one day and one night, and she became exhausted. When I saw that, I said: ‘O my mother, by Allah, even if you had one hundred souls and they were to depart one by one, I would not give up this religion of mine for anything, so if you want to, eat and if you don’t want to, don’t eat.’ So she ate.”

Al-Layth was sitting with Malik one day, in the assembly of his students, when someone announced that elephants were walking nearby. All the students of Malik left to look at them, (except al-Layth). Malik said to him:

"Why have you not gone out to see them since they are not in your land of al-Andalus?"

Al-Layth said:

"Indeed, I have only come from my land to see you and learn from your guidance and knowledge. I have not come to see elephants."
