S3 question
Benzaldehyde is very difficult to be synthesized by acylation of benzene with methanoyl chloride, HCOCl since methanoyl chloride is highly unstable. Suggest another 2 ways for converting benzene into benzaldehyde.

Suggestions for common mistake in S3 exam
1) For functional group of ester, write carboalkoxy group instead of ester group (STPM 2023)
2) Writing [H] or [O] in chemical reaction are rejected. Write the reagent and conditions on arrow is enough. (Only for reduction and oxidation reaction. Other reactions might still need to write reagent beside the organic reagent)
3) Tollens' reagent, not tollen's reagent
4) For positive result of Brady's test, write orange precipitate, not yellow
5) For production of aminobenzoic acid from nitroalkylbenzene, perform oxidation first before reduction by Sn, Conc. HCl
6) For elimination reaction of haloalkane, must use ethanolic KOH with heat or reflux, NaOH is rejected
7) When the words reaction scheme/synthetic pathway appear on the question, straight away write the pathway (single pathway) without writing chemical equation. Only major product and reagent with conditions are required to write.
8) Fehling's solution does not react with benzaldehyde
9) For oxidation of aromatic compound, as long as it has benzylic hydrogen, benzoic acid is formed regarding any functional groups are present on the alkyl group (side chain)
10) For nucleophile (like cyanide or hydroxide ion) in mechanism, draw the negative charge on the specific atom (- on C atom and O atom respectively)
11) When drawing structural formula for alkyl group (e.g propyl), display as -CH₂CH₂CH₃ or -CH-CH₃

12) For formation of diol from alkene, use cold alkaline KMnO₄ solution instead of acidic solution
13) The type of reaction for benzene ring is electrophilic aromatic substitution. Without the word "aromatic" is totally rejected.
14) Differentiate the type and name of reaction clearly. Take alkylation of benzene as example:
Name of reaction: Friedel-Crafts alkylation
Type of reaction: Electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction
15) Bromine water unable to distinguish phenylamine and phenol since both compound give the same observation.
16) Consider Markovnikov's rule, Saytzeff's rule, stability of intermediate for mechanism and the products formed.
17) Side product formed during the reaction between alcohol or carboxylic acid with PCl₃ is H₃PO₃, not H₃PO₄
18) Mechanism for electrophilic aromatic substitution: Arrow in the first step must draw from the inner solid bond of benzene ring. Resonance structure is required. Refer https://t.me/STPMchemistrychannel/294
19) Halogen group on benzene ring is a ring-deactivating group but still an ortho- and para- directors
20) Dehydration of alcohol must clearly state is 180°C with concentrated sulphuric acid. Heat or reflux might be penalised.
21) Grignard reagent, not gridnard, nor grinard

Hi. Good evening everyone. I am Chew Sensei. Thank you for your support all these while. STPM CHEMISTRY SEMESTER 3 : ORGANIC CHEMISTRY class will be opening soon.

OUR CLASS WILL BEGIN ON
28 August 2024 (Wednesday) -
EVERY Wednesday
FROM 7.00 PM TILL 9.30 PM

For the tuition rate, it will goes by
RM 80 (Penisular Malaysia)
RM 85 (SABAH SARAWAK)
1st payment is for September 2024 while Last payment till Jan 2025

Time allocation for each lesson begin
7.00 - 7.40 : 1st Session
7.40 - 7.50 : Break 1
7.50 - 8.30 : 2nd Session
8.30 - 8.40 : Break 2
8.40 - 9.20 : 3rd Session

Hope all of you are available at that time. I can't do it on weekend because nowadays I am packed with other sports activities so no choice I have to do it on weekday

My class will be conducted in English mostly via online learning where I uses ZOOM as the learning apps to teach. All sessions will be recorded and upload in our Group.

As for the notes, it's rewritten and therefore different from Module since I tried to make my notes as comprehensive as I can and it's definitely more than the one you see in the module so don't worry about it. Every end of the chapter, I attach the past year questions from 2005 - 2023 about the chapter, and will do an answering technique session teaching you how to solve structure and essay questions. In the notes also I will attach the solution to answer in objective questions hoping it will helps you to understand how to get to the answer.

So hope you will join in my lesson for STPM  Chemistry Sem 3 2024 and would continue for at least till the end of Semester 3.
