John Nettleton has died. He was a very distinctive English character actor, most famous for recurring roles in the comedy series Yes Minister and The New Statesman. I also saw him in Upstairs Downstairs (1971), Shadows (1975) and Brideshead Revisited (1981).
But I first knew him in the Doctor Who story Ghost Light (1989), as an ill-fated Victorian reverend. That was quite late in his career, but the "pompous upper-class patriarch" was an archetype he excelled at and returned to again and again, in both drama and comedy, on the big and small screens and on the stage.
He had one of the most distinctive voices and epitomised a style of acting that is now very much in the past. Indeed, with his death, I doubt there is any man left in England who sounds like he did: as if he had just crossed over into our world from a drawing room in the 19th Century.
RIP John Nettleton, 1929-2023.

I attended my first blōt this weekend and spoke to my ancestral gods, to Thor, upon my ancestral homeland. I spent a long time in an exotic land saying hippy mantras and trying to find spiritual meaning in other cultures, and while I learned a great many things during that chapter in South America, I felt uprooted. I never felt like I blended in with the landscape like I do back home.
Embracing my native spirituality and returning to the trees feels the most organic expression of my soul. And while I understand some people think Paganism is dead, I disagree. For my son to witness such a rite at a young age has left a deep impression upon his spirit. For we are reclaiming what is ours and passing on to our children a living pagan religion. I am very grateful for this experience.
It is important we gather, we reclaim and through our native spirituality that ties us to the land which our ancestors are imbedded within, we resist.
The American/modern concept of what makes a nation is proto-globalist and utterly perfidious. It demands schizophrenic levels of delusion and relies on ephemera like passports and constitutions to uphold itself.
It must be mocked, denounced, and ultimately done away with as much as possible.
Ethnonationalism is the only way.
To appeal to many different cultures, the film should ideally be as generic as possible.
Everyone would be better off if Hislop, and people like him, had more self-awareness and honesty, and a lot less complacency. Their tendency towards intellectual superiority, and their contradictory disdain for intellectualism, have brought them to an impasse.

Which of those films will be good for the public? Which of them will be remembered 50, 20 or even 5 years hence?
RIP Silvio Berlusconi, 1936-2023. He is off to the great bunga bunga party in the sky.
