Kenya now offers a virtual work permit, which allows foreigners working in foreign companies can live and work remotely in Kenya.

This permit is available to individuals employed by companies based outside Kenya who work remotely from within the country, as well as freelancers working remotely for foreign businesses.

To qualify for the Digital Nomad Work Permit, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:
- Hold a valid passport
- Provide proof of remote employment with a foreign-based company
- Demonstrate a minimum annual income of $55,000 from sources outside Kenya
- Show evidence of accommodation arrangements within Kenya
- Present a clean criminal record from their country of origin or habitual residence
- Prove that their presence in Kenya will benefit the nation

However, individuals engaged in employment or income-generating activities for Kenyan employers or companies are not eligible for this permit.

EEU has introduced VAT on electricity bills for customers using over 200 kWh per month. The policy has been effective since November 2024. However VAT will also apply to service charges, like new connections and other related fees. Starting December, customers have noticed VAT on their bills, along with charges for usage from September to November. This move aims to align EEU with Ethiopia’s tax regulations and ensure uniformity across utilities.

Fintech startup SunPay had its license revoked by the National Bank due to multiple violations. These violations include
- Failing to appoint a CEO,
- Renew its license, and
- Maintain a physical presence

SunPay was launched as a subsidiary of Sunshine Investment Group three years ago with a capital of 100 million birr. Despite its early momentum, the company failed to maintain compliance and ignored NBE inquiries.

But the news isn’t all bad, as SunPay expects to be back in the next six months to a year.
