قال العلامة السعدي رحمه الله:
Shaykh al-Sa'di, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

‏فالكسل هو أصل الخيبة والفشل
Laziness is the root of disappointment and failure

‏فالكسلان لا يدرك خيراً
For the lazy person achieves no good

‏ولا ينال مكرمة
Nor attains any honor

‏بهجة قلوب الأبرار (ص٣٤)

قال الإمام أحمد بن حنبل رحمه الله
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

‏كيف يتبيّن للرّجُل ما هو عليه من خطأ؛ إذا
How will a man realize the mistake he is upon if

‏لم يجِد مُنكِرًا، ولا جفْوةً من صديق؟!
he does not find someone to disapprove of it, nor harshness from a friend?

‏الآداب الشرعية (٢٢٩/١)

قال الإمام ابن القيِّم رحمه الله
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said

‏إذا أردتَ أن تستدل على ما في القلب
If you want to infer what is in the heart

‏فاستدل عليه بحركة اللِّسان
Then infer it by the movement of the tongue

‏فإنّهُ يُطلعك على ما في القلب
For it reveals to you what is in the heart

‏شاء صاحبُه أم أبى
Whether its owner wills it or not

‏الجواب الكافي (ص٣٧٩)

قال الإمام ابن القيّم رحمه الله:
Imām Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allāh have mercy on him, said:

‏فرق بين من يقول لك بلسانه إني أحبك ، ولا شاهد عليه من حاله
There is a difference between someone who tells you with his tongue, “I love you,” and there is no evidence of his condition

‏وبين من هو ساكت لا يتكلم ، وأنت ترى شواهد أحواله كلها ناطقة بحبه لك
and between the one who is silent and does not say it, and you see evidence of all his conditions that speak of his love for you.

قال ابن القيم:
Ibn al-Qayyim said:

‏من شاء أن يسكن رياض الجنة في الدنيا فليستوطن
‎Whoever wants to live in the gardens of Paradise in this world, let him settle there

‏مجالس الذكر فإنها رياض الجنة
‎the gatherings of remembrance are gardens of Paradise. ?

Abū Sulaymān said, “The real loser is the one who makes the rightness of his actions apparent to people, and shows the ugly actions to the One who is nearer to him than his jugular vein.”

اذكر الله في راحتك، ليذكرك في حاجتك
remember Allah in your comfort, so that He may remember you during your need

وكان من دعاء بعض السلف:
one of the supplications of the pious predecessors was:

‏"اللهم أعزني بطاعتك، ولا تُذلَّني بمعصيتك".
“O Allah, honour me with your obedience, and do not humiliate me with your disobedience.”

‏[الداء والدواء ٩٤]

Ibn al-Jawzī رحمه الله said:

“O you who once had a bond with his Lord which he himself undid, O you who became perplexed regarding what he was ordained to do and stopped counting his bad deeds: weep for the days in which you were in contact with your Lord, for such days indeed warrant being cried over. Indeed, the remnants of the beloved engender in the heart nothing but sorrowful memories and concern.”

A Muslim should not have the attitude of revenge and “getting even”. This would cause hatred among the Muslims and remove from among them feelings of love and security.

A Muslim should always be willing to forgive, especially when dealing with the spouse and close relatives. Showing forgiveness makes a person worthy of Allāh’s forgiveness.

In one of the reports of the above hadīth by Jarīr Bin ‘Abdullāh رضي الله عنه, Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ said:

He who does not show mercy, no mercy will be shown to him (by Allāh) And he who does not forgive will not be forgiven. (Recorded by Ahmad and at-Tabarānī in al-Kabīr. Verified to be authentic by al-Albānī)
