Stele of a Vaccean horseman

Stele of a Vaccean horseman

Roman historian Appian referred directly to Vacceans in his text regarding what he witnessed around 136aCE when Lepidus withdrew his troops from the besieged northern Spanish city of Palencia (Pallantia), due to lack of food. The Vacceans learned and took advantage of this by attacking. Only by an eclipse the Vacceans saw as divine sign, did Lepidus manage to save himself. Authors from a said argumental line, suggest the cult relates to Lugh, arguably the most important Pan-Celtic deity, or Dis Pater as interpreted by César. On dates between Lughnasadh and Samhain, Lugh is celebrated as a culmination of crops, in which Dis Pater is characterized in his versatility, showing his power in a most positive manner. This is cosigned in the Irish epic, and archeologically contrasts the sanctuary of Lugh at Peñalba de Villastar.

Texts by Strabo on Vacceans and Celtiberians refer to a lunar cult they all attested to that was rendered at the doors of their homes on full moons until dawn.

Baths of Ledesma (*Bletisa*), León

Baths of Ledesma (Bletisa), León

According to Asturian philologist Menéndez Pidal, the linguistic resolution of Ledesma is the following:
Bletisama-Letisama-Letesma-Ledesma

These thermal baths are situated by the Tormes River at the city of Ledesma, central Spain.
Usual as the Vettones or 'pre-Celtic' town this is, a granite boar was pulled out and discovered from the brambles.
Dating to 7th-1st BCE, the known Boar of Lledesma was likely dedicated to the goddess Belisama, or as the Vettones called her, Bletisama. She is consort of Belenus, and goddess of the hearth, domestic fires, and rivers. Local legends speak of boars having been thrown in rivers in past times, possibly for the consort of Belenus.

Bletisama also gives an ethnonym to Bletonesii, the Vettonic culture that resided in Bletisa (now Ledesma), thus calling themselves Bletonenses.
