That the runes link to the spinal column is very significant, since the 24 Runes of the Elder Futhark match with the 24 moveable vertebrae. The other 9 Runes match with the Sacrum (5) and Coccyx (4) which are fused vertebrae and not in use now - i.e. they are connected to Ancient Man. This alone hints that the 33 Runes may be of a more ancient time than scholars think today. That the last four are the Four Hallows (Gral-Runes) shows the progression downwards towards the Origin.

Yggdrasil - the World Tree - is a similar symbolism to the World Mountain, the latter called 'Meru' or 'Sumeru' in Hinduism. In microcosm this is the human spine, shaped like the Spear of Woden and The Serpent.
