Allah, may He be Blessed and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.

And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: ‘My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was small’”

[al-Israa’ 17:23-25].

Imam Ibn Jareer at-Tabari (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Your Lord, O Muhammad, has ordained that you should worship none but Allah, for it is not appropriate that any be worshipped but He. And He has commanded you to be dutiful to your parents, to treat them kindly and to honour them. End quote.

Tafseer at-Tabari (17/413-414)

Istighfar (praying for forgiveness):

Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“I said (to them): Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance; And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.”

[Nuh 71:10-12]

The Words of Allah: “Verily, Good Deeds Remove Evil Deeds”:

‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) narrated a man kissed a woman, and then he came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and told him. Then it was revealed, “And perform as-salat, at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful.” (11:114) The man asked, “Is that just for me, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “It is for anyone who does that among my Ummah.”

[Sahih Muslim, The Book of Repentance, 2763 a]

Explanation
This man was a Muslim named Abu Yasir Ka’b ibn Amr. He went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and told him what he did.

“And perform as-salat…” Stand-you and your Ummah, O Muhammad-for the obligatory prayers.

“…at the two ends of the day…” At the beginning of the day and the end. Ibn ‘Abbas viewed these to be Fajr and Maghrib, Adh-Dhahhak believed they were Fajr and Asr, and Muqatil held they referred to Fajr and Dhuhr.

“…and in some hours of the night.” During the first part of the night that immediately follows the day, i.e, Maghrib. Additionally included is Isha, the last part of the night that immediately precedes the day.

“Verily, good deeds remove evil deeds.” Good deeds are an expiation for minor sins. If a person commits minor sins and does good deeds, these actions remove those minor sins. This ruling isn’t extended to the major sins. It has been proven that only the minor sins are expiated by good deeds.

Allah says, “If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden, We shall remit from you your (small) sins.” (An-Nisa’:31) An-Nawawi (May Allah have mercy on him) said, “Allah says, ‘Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds.’ The scholars differ about the meaning of good deeds. Ath-Tha’labi said most of the people interpret good deeds to refer to the five daily obligatory prayers. Mujahid said good deeds are “Subhan’Allah, Alhamdulilah, La ilaha illAllah, Allahu akbar.”

“That is a reminder for the mindful.” This verse appeals to a person’s conscience as a warning.

“The man said, ‘Is that just for me, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘It is for anyone who does that among my Ummah.'” The man asked if this was specifically for him and the Prophet (ﷺ) informed him this was for his entire Ummah until the day of Judgment. Thus, bad deeds are erased by good deeds.

Did you read the Quran today?:

Mālik b. Dīnār used to say,

“Whoever does not feel a sense of companionship in the speech of Allāh but does with the speech of creation; then indeed his knowledge has diminished, his heart has become blind and he has wasted his life”

[Rawḍat al-ʿUqalāʾ (85)]

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah said,

“Reciting the Qurʾān in the commanded manner causes strong īmān and increases it in certainty, tranquillity and cure”

[Majmūʿ al-Fatāwá (7: 283)].

We can only repent:

It is reported that Ṭalq b. Ḥabīb – Allāh have mercy on him – said, “The right of Allāh is too great and heavy for the creation to fulfill and the blessings of Allāh are too many to enumerate, but you should remain repentant, morning and evening.”

[Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā, Al-Tawbah article 62]

Don't forget your daily adkaar:

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

“He who recites in the morning and in the evening the statement: `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with praising Him)’ one hundred times,

will not be surpassed on the Day of Resurrection by anyone with better deeds than one who utters the same words or utters more of these words.”

Don't waste time:

Abu Al-Wafa’ Ali ibn Aqil (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I do not allow myself to waste even one hour of my life; even when I am not reading anything or reciting anything, I would think whilst I am resting of some issues of knowledge and I will not get up until I have come up with something I can write down.

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

‎“You may see a kind, righteous man who has a beautiful attitude, as one of the most beautiful of people in appearance, even if he is not good-looking,

especially if he is blessed with a share of Qiyam al-Layl (the night prayer), for it gives light to the face and makes it handsome.”

Dua for protection from oppressors:

رَبَّنَا أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْ هَٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ الظَّالِمِ أَهْلُهَا وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ وَلِيًّا وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ نَصِيرًا

Our Lord! Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from You one who will protect, and raise for us from You one who will help.

[Surah An-Nisa]

Stay awake early morning:

Sleeping is disliked after the Fajr prayer as this is a time of blessings, hard work, activity and striving to earn one’s livelihood.

Sakhar Al-Ghaamidi narrated that the Prophet peace be upon him said: "O Allaah! Bless my nation in its early times." Moreover, if he had to dispatch a battalion or an army, he would send it at the beginning of the day." (i.e. after Fajr) [Ahmad, Abu Daawood, At-Tirmithi, An-Nasaa’i and Ibn Maajah]

Ibn Al-Qayyim rahimahullāh said,

“The morning sleep prevents (people from gaining) sustenance as this is a time when the creation looks for provision. It is also the time when the sustenance is being divided. Thus, if a person sleeps at this time, he prevents himself (from sustenance) except in case of an obstacle or a necessity. Besides, morning sleep is very harmful for the body as it makes it lazy and exhausts the secretions that should be transformed by sport (physical exercise), so morning sleep causes breaking up, tiredness and weakness. If this happens before defecating, physical activity and sport or occupying the stomach with something, then this is an incurable disease that causes many kinds of diseases.”
