This study, "Functional determinants and evolutionary consequences of pleiotropy in complex and Mendelian traits", is the first part of our two-year project examining genotype-to-phenotype relationships in humans and mice. This part of the project was dedicated to systematic analysis of pleiotropy - a phenomenon of multiple phenotypic effects of individual genetic alterations.
Using our 2020 study of pleiotropy in the UK Biobank as a starting point we extended the analysis beyond complex traits, and demonstrated the universal features of pleiotropic genes. Besides, we discovered unique patterns of natural selection on pleiotropic genetic variation, with a combination of both negative and positive selection signals within pleiotropic genes.
