“A Catholic compendium published in 1943 noticed with great satisfaction that among the now 96 million inhabitants of Germany 48 million were Catholics and only 45 million Protestants. Speaking of the Christian share in Germany or Greater Germany respectively, involves numbers at the level of 75 million prior and 100 million during World War II. Pagans, on the other hand, barely exceeded a few thousands with an unambiguous tendency towards declining. With them, evidently, waging war would have been impossible.”
