European Parliament Member Christine Anderson had her microphone cut off in the Parliament Chamber for daring to call out the ‘Pfizergate’ corruption scandal engulfing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Top European prosecutors are now investigating allegations of criminal wrongdoing involving text messages exchanged between von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the negotiation of the multi-billion Euro vaccine procurement deal.

NZ Police are in crisis.

I've had a few very concerning conversations with a number of current and recently departed NZ Police colleagues, and they have shared with me the following:

1. The recent insulting pay offer was the last straw.

2. More than 45 experienced Police have left in Northland alone in the last 12 months. That’s a significant issue.

3. Australian Police recruiters are run off their feet because our frontline is paid better over the ditch.

4. The standards have dropped dramatically, with new recruits coming out of Police College that would never have made it in days gone by. Examples are recruits who are basically incompetent in handling firearms, or can't swim, or struggle to meet the physical test - let alone the academic requirements.

Policing, when done properly, can be challenging, dangerous, and incredibly stressful.

In my 14 years of service in the Police, I can recall several incidents where I really thought I was going to meet my maker.

Policing is not a career path for the faint-hearted - it is a vocation and one that is driven by service to our community and our country. Keeping communities safe starts with law and order - a properly resourced frontline in order to do that.

Being “tough on crime” starts with paying our Police properly, so that we don’t lose them to our Aussie neighbours that clearly value their frontline more, and therefore remunerates them appropriately.
