see a dark cave or a great
void or an inward light shining
like unto a swarm of fireflies
or grains of camphor or a fluffy
cotton flower or a white lotus
or a bright cloud or a scintillating
mist or a looking-glass of burnished
silver or a dish of mother-of-pearl
or a flickering flame of fire or
a snow-clad mountain or
a wave-less pond or a full moon
or a radiant human form or
a blazing sun and a sea of light.
these shall be known as the sixteen
signs of progress on the yoga path.
they are the road marks that tell
the traveller that he is approaching
the goal even as the morning
star heralds the approaching of dawn...

the constant recitation of my
name is known as jāpa and is
of three kinds: voiced; whispered
and silent; the last-named being

either sluggish or restless jāpa

sluggish or restless occurs during
recitation meditation should be
done again. thus the yogīṇ steadily
advances on the path...

at first close to his nest & then
flies ever further and higher
according as his wings gain
strength even so the diligent
yogīṇ by the power of meditation

one is then liberated while living.
one is endowed with a body
of prakāśa and lives like a śiva
himself upon earth although śiva
is all-pervading absolute reality.
upon departure from this world
one goes to śiva's home which
is the abode of purity and melāpa
[śivalaya] and returns no more.
he verily who knows this secret
becomes one with me the highest
absolute reality. therefore let one
practise diligently with devotion
to me alone and he should adore
his ādhyātmik gūru as he adores me.
having begun this perfect practice
one should not give up...
