Gold powers past £2,100 per ounce

Gold looks set to end the year on a strong note, with a 2.5% gain in the past week pushing the metal back above £2,100 per ounce to hit £2,139.95 so far today. A combination of factors has helped give gold a final boost as the year draws to a close:

- China have reported new gold reserve purchases following a 6-month pause. As the main driver of the rally early in 2024, China's return to gold buying is a positive sign for the metal in the year ahead.
- Events in Syria have only added to the instability in the Middle East, and have seen some safe haven buying return to the market this week.
- US inflation figures released yesterday came in as expected, and although still above the Fed's 2% target, markets remain confident of another cut to US rates next week.

The uncertainty of the current market could cause further volatile swings to the price, but 2024 has been an exceptional year for gold, rising over 30% in the past 12 months and pushing to new all-time highs. Many of the factors behind this year's price gains remain, and leaves the outlook for 2025 very strong as well.
