Will be presenting **11th July (Thursday)** …

Will be presenting 11th July (Thursday) at 10:00 GMT+5 at Google I/O Extended Central Asia! ?*✔️***

We will explore new brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and their exceptional features, look at the projects on social (emotional) features, ethical AI and overview AI Regulation.

I will also share my deep interest in viewing AI as a complex mirror of the human psyche

Move 37

It has been 8 years (9-15 March, 2016), since the Go game between Lee Sedol (top Go Player from South Korea) vs. AlphaGo by Google DeepMind.

What is so special about Move 37?

"Professional commentators almost unanimously agreed that not a single human player would choose that move. [...] AlphaGo [suggested] that there was one in 10,000 probability that Move 37 would have been played by a human player. So it knew that this was an extremely unlikely move – it went beyond its human guide, it came with something new and creative, different."

Lee Sedol comes back and wins in Game 4. The DeepMind Challennge Match ended at 4:1.

The video is of Google DeepMind's AlphaGo three main components:
- Policy Network – trained newtwork on high-level games Go to imitate players.
- Value Network – evaluates board position and say what is the probability of winning in this particular position.
- Tree Search – look throught different variations of the game and try to figure out what will happen in the future.

**Self-awareness,** **sleep**,[**metacognition**](https://preview.scu.edu/media/college-of-arts-and-sciences/psychology/documents/2011-Kahan-LaBerge-FINAL-pub.pdf) ***?***

Self-awareness, sleep,metacognition ?

- The continuity theory now has evidence for the similarities of mental content throughout states, and also for similarities at the process levels of cognition.
- High-order cognition is much more common in dreams than has been assumed, so any theory of dreaming that does not take this into account is out-of-date.
- Experiences sampled from dreaming and waking are more similar with respect to their process features than with respect to their structural features.
- Some home-dreamer methodologies like the DreamLightÒ, NightCap, or other ambulatory sleep-recording systems are both convenient and cost-effective and represent valuable tools in studies of subjective experience across dreaming and waking.

Gender differences in dreaming. Women typically report:
- higher dream recall frequency than men (e.g., Schredl & Reinhard, 2008),
- higher motivation to recall dreams (Schredl, Nürnberg, & Weiler, 1996),
- greater interest in dream interpretation (Schredl & Piel, 2008)
- greater self-awareness in their dreams (Kozmová & Wolman, 2006).

Lucid dreaming dialogue

Idnependent group of scientists from France, Germany, the Netherlands and the US, conducted experiments to establish complex two-way communication during sleep. Scientists explained how to recognise when participants are in the dream: participants learned to react to cues – sounds, lights, or finger tapping – when they understand they are sleeping by moving eyes in a specific way.

One dreamer reported math problems coming out of a car radio, whilst he was driving in his dream. Another was at a party when he heard a narrator in a movie to ask him whether he spoke Spanish.

The communications happened as simple yes/no questions or math problems, at which the dreamers replied with eye movements using Mores code.

The researcher asked 158 questions and lucid dreamers responded correctly 18.6% and incorrectly 3.2% of time, 17.7% were not clear and 60.8% of questions got no response.

"Dreamers live in a world entirely created of memories stored in the brain. It is a way to communicate with people in that world."

Self-awareness, consciousness:
-attention
-planning
-memory

Theory of consciousness is...!

“If AIs can give the impression of consciousness, that makes it an urgent priority for scientists and philosophers to weigh in.”

What is conscioussness? Within philosophy, there is Bertrand Russell (1921, p.31) writing, “A desire is ‘conscious’ when we have told ourselves that we have it.” In psychology, there is Jean Piaget’s statement (1964/1967, p.19) that “thought becomes conscious to the degree to which the child is able to communicate it."

What's consciousness from physics perspective? "Active" information. Properties of consciousness (Something Deeply Hidden, Sean Carroll):
- complexity,
- content, i.e.,meaning/knowledge,
- processing/integrating (see below) mechanism,
- sustained internal reality (computronium/perceptronium)/ memory (continuity/state rigidity),
- flexibility to change/adapt,
- perceived locality/uniqueness = identity

From systems perspective, an artificial stimulus-response system capable of conscious response is composed of an artificial visual receptor, artificial synapse, artificial neuron circuits, and actuator (e.g., using an AVR, an AS, AN circuits, and a robot hand).

Just a month ago Science mentions a paper discussing 14 "indicators of consciousness" (which all are based on integration theory; also, "probability of consciousness") and that so far artificial systems meet only some of them.

Integration theories include...
Recurrent Processing Theory – passing information through feedback loops is consciousness.
Global Neuronal Workspace Theory – consciousness is formed from independent streams of information that pass through a bottleneck to combine in a workspace analogous to a computer clipboard.
Higher Order Theories – consciousness as a process of representing and annotating inputs received from the senses.

Now, a letter signed by many prominent researchers including Stephen Fleming (computational models of metacognition), Joseph LeDoux (emotions, fear and anxiety circuits), Cecilia Heyes (! evolutionary psychology) claims information theory about consciousness is pseudoscience:

"The media, including both Nature and Science, have recently celebrated the Integrated Information Theory as a 'leading' and empirically tested theory of consciousness. [...] Given its panpsychist commitments, until the theory as a whole [...] is imperially testable, pseudoscience label should indeed apply."

Another letter called to stop working on Giant AI projects from March (larger than ChatGPT) for at least half a year, due to concerns of using "commensurate care and resources" (by Asilomar AI principles).

Artificial stimulus-response system capable of conscious response

A stimulus-response system and conscious response enable humans to respond effectively to environmental changes and external stimuli. This paper presents an artificial stimulus-response system that is inspired by human conscious response and is capable of…

**Reading** **as New Year resolution**

Reading as New Year resolution

Keep the story flowing.

200 words per minute~ 30-50 pages per hour. It's easier to read in longer chunks and timing self with short breaks, e.g., 3-7h per setting (the more you do it...); better in early morning or late afternoon.

Reading 30 pages/h for 3h every day for 21 days, that's 1,890 pages.

Sustain attention for longer periods is cognitive control.

Happy New Year Everyone! ?❤️

**A review of** [**a review**](https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adi4682)

A review of a review

Book "Universe in a Box" by Andrew Pontzen about simulating the Universe. It is an expedition into two versions of the cosmos – observed and created – drawing parallels with weather forecast and discussing how artificial intelligence might help make advancements in the field. A note on Dendritic Algorithm from 60s and nuances of Bayesian statistics.

The reviewer suggests the book's missing opportunities: not mentioning historical connections, e.g., the role of intense competition within military-industrial context in early high-perfmorning computer development and... about the lack of illustrations.
