BENEFIT: A Forgotten Sunnah After Reciting The Qur'ān

It is recommended to say the following supplication upon concluding the recitation of the Qurʾān:

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ.

(Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdik, lā ilāha illā ant, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk)

Evidence for This Sunnah

ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated:

"The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ never sat in a gathering, recited the Qurʾān, or performed prayer without concluding it with certain words."

She further inquired:

"O Messenger of Allāh, I have noticed that you never sit in a gathering, recite the Qurʾān, or perform prayer without ending with these words."

The Prophet ﷺ responded:

"Yes, whoever speaks good words, they will serve as a seal for the good he has done. And whoever utters something wrong, these words will serve as an expiation for his mistakes."

Then he recited:

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ.

The Neglect of This Sunnah Today

Regrettably, this Sunnah has been largely abandoned by many people today—either due to ignorance or forgetfulness. Instead, it has been replaced with practices such as saying ṢadaqAllāh-ul-ʿAẓīm or kissing the Qurʾān after recitation.

It is, therefore, essential to revive and spread awareness of this Sunnah so that it may once again become widely practiced.

Authentication of the ḥadīth

Imām an-Nasā'ee titled a chapter in his book: "What to Say Upon Completing the Recitation of the Qur'ān."

An-Nasā’ee verified the ḥadīth’s chain as authentic in As-Sunan Al-Kubrā.

Ibn Ḥajar affirmed in An-Nukat (2/733) that its chain is sound.

Al-Albānī also authenticated it in Silsilat Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥah (7/495), stating that it meets the criteria of Imām Muslim.

Sheikh Muqbil Al-Wādi’ee classified it as authentic in Al-Jāmi’ As-Ṣaḥīḥ Mimma Laysa fī Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥayn (2/128)

NOTE: Sheikh Yahya ḥafidhahullāh stated (paraphrasing):
أحسن ما في الباب حديث عائشة في الصحيح المسند، وليس فيه لفظة "أشهد"، وإنما وردت في حديث أبي برزة وغيره، وفيها ضعفٌ؛ لكنها في الباب، فلا بأس بقولها. اهـ بتصرف من درس الصحيح المسند لشيخنا يحيى.
The most authentic narration in this chapter is the ḥadīth of ’Ā'ishah in As-Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Musnad, which does not include the phrase "Ashhadu." However, this phrase appears in the hadith of Abū Barzah and others (such as Abu Hurairah), though with some weakness. Nevertheless, since it is among the narrations on this topic, there is no harm in saying it. [His lesson on As-Ṣaḥīḥ al-Musnad]

نصيحة مفيدة - Beneficial Advice

قالتْ الطالبةُ الأولى للطّالبةِ الثانيةِ:
(١) احفظي جزءا من القرآن الكريم،
(٢) وبعضَ الأحاديث النبوية،
(٣) وتحدثي بالعربية كثيرا.

The first student said to the second student:
(1) Memorise a portion of the Holy Qur'ān,
(2) some Prophetic Hadiths,
(3) and speak in Arabic frequently.

Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah raḥimahullāh said:
«اعتياد اللغة يؤثر في العقل والخلق، والدين تأثيرا قويا بينا، ويؤثر أيضا في مشابهة صدر هذه الأمة من الصحابة والتابعين، ومشابهتهم تزيد العقل والدين والخلق»
"Becoming accustomed to a language has a profound and evident effect on the intellect, character, and religion. It also influences one to resemble the early generations of this Ummah, namely the Sahabah and the Tabi'een (Successors), and resembling them enhances intellect, religion, and character." [Al-Iqtiḍhā' (1/527)]

He also said rahimahullah:
«وَمَا زَالَ السَّلَفُ يَكْرَهُونَ تَغْيِيرَ شَعَائِرِ الْعَرَبِ حَتَّى فِي الْمُعَامَلَاتِ وَهُوَ " التَّكَلُّم بِغَيْرِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ " إلَّا لِحَاجَةِ كَمَا نَصَّ عَلَى ذَلِكَ مَالِك وَالشَّافِعِيُّ وَأَحْمَد بَلْ قَالَ مَالِك: مَنْ تَكَلَّمَ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا بِغَيْرِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ أُخْرِجَ مِنْهُ. مَعَ أَنَّ سَائِرَ الْأَلْسُنِ يَجُوزُ النُّطْقُ بِهَا لِأَصْحَابِهَا؛ وَلَكِنْ سَوَّغُوهَا لِلْحَاجَةِ وَكَرِهُوهَا لِغَيْرِ الْحَاجَةِ وَلِحِفْظِ شَعَائِرِ الْإِسْلَامِ؛ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ أَنْزَلَ كِتَابَهُ بِاللِّسَانِ الْعَرَبِيِّ وَبَعَثَ بِهِ نَبِيَّهُ الْعَرَبِيَّ وَجَعَلَ الْأُمَّةَ الْعَرَبِيَّةَ خَيْرَ الْأُمَمِ فَصَارَ حِفْظُ شِعَارِهِمْ مِنْ تَمَامِ حِفْظِ الْإِسْلَامِ».
"The Salaf consistently disapproved of altering the traditions of the Arabs, even in matters of dealings, such as speaking in a language other than Arabic, except when there was a need. This was explicitly mentioned by Malik, Al-Shafi’ee, and Ahmad. Malik even said, “Whoever speaks in our masjid in a language other than Arabic should be removed from it.” While it is permissible for people to speak in their native tongues, they only allowed it when needed and disliked it otherwise, in order to preserve the symbols of Islam. This is because Allah revealed His Book in the Arabic language, sent His Prophet as an Arab, and made the Arab nation the best of nations. Thus, preserving their language is integral to preserving Islam itself."

Update Regarding Masjid As-Sahabah

As some of you may be aware, during one of our online classes, I shared the exciting news that we were planning to establish Masjid As-Sahabah in East London.

The vision was to create a permanent masjid, madrasah, and a hub for da’wah in a prime location.

At the time of that announcement, everything appeared promising, and we were optimistic about finalising the agreement within weeks.

Unfortunately, as we approached the final stages and after collecting a significant amount (largely through loans), unexpected delays began to arise from the other party involved.

We made several attempts to seek clarity and explore potential solutions to salvage the deal, but it has become clear that option is no longer feasible.

Until now, we kept most of the details private, awaiting the agreement’s conclusion. However, given the funds that were collected, we feel it is our duty to provide everyone with an update at this stage.

While it is disappointing that the deal could not be finalised, qaddara llāh wa shā fa’al, we return to square one with nearly £54k in hand and valuable lessons learned from this experience.

After consultation and reflection, we have decided to set higher ambitions and aim to purchase a building outright. This approach is far more logical and sustainable in the long term, though it will require patience and additional effort.

Renting a space for £60-70k annually does not make financial sense when the same amount could be used to repay a loan on a purchased building. This would be a more prudent and beneficial investment in the long run.

In the meantime, however, online classes will continue as usual, and we are exploring the possibility of hosting physical classes at a hired venue on weekends, inshaAllah.

May Allah reward you all for your patience, grant us Tawfeeq, and bless us with success in this endeavour.
