#Rule of the day by Amy sir

Actually

I never get bored by this city. ~~Actually~~, each time I return I find something new to interest me.

I never get bored by this city. In fact, each time I return I find something new to interest me.

When actually means ‘in fact’, it is usually used to correct a misunderstanding:

? I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.
Well actually I’ve only just arrived.

When you simply want to develop a previous statement, use in fact or as a matter of fact**:

? The winter of 1940 was extremely bad. In fact most people say it was the worst winter in living memory.

We need to produce and export more than we do ~~actually~~.

We need to produce and export more than we do at present.

When you mean ‘at the present time’, use at present, at the moment or currently (~~NOT actually)~~:

? At the moment I’m working part-time in a travel agency.

*?Actual / Current / Present*?

*?Actual is very different from current and present.*

*?Current and present refer to things happening now (not in the past or future).*

*?Actual refers to things that are true (not things that are false).*

The current unemployment rate is 8%. = the rate now.

This article claims that unemployment is at 5%, but the actual rate is around
8%. = the correct rate.

Biden is currently the president of the United States.
= he is the president now.

The language spoken in Brazil is actually Portuguese, not Spanish.
= “actually” is used to make a correction. Portuguese is the true language spoken in Brazil.

?Now, what about current and present? These two words are usually the same.

?Sometimes, current is used in the sense of "generally now" and present is often
used more in the sense of "immediately now, in this place/moment."

My girlfriend currently lives in New York, but she’s in Los Angeles at present.
= in general, she is in New York, but at this very moment, she is in Los Angeles.

The current situation is good, but the present case is an emergency. = in general the situation is good nowadays, but right now we have an  emergency.

*?At present always means "now." But there can be some confusion with the word
presently, which can mean "now" or "very soon."*

He will be here presently. = He will be here very soon.

She is presently working on a new project. = She is working on a new project right now.

*?You can know which meaning it has by the verbs: if presently is used with "will,"
then it means "very soon in the future." If
presently* is used with "is/are" or other
verbs in the present tense, then it means "now".

STORY OF THE DAY BY AMY SIR

14/09/2024

?  The Strange Old Man

One day, a kind boy called Amy went to the forest to collect wood. There, he met a strange man who begged him for food. Amy shared his food with the old man. Then the man asked him to help him cut a tree. Amy obediently cut the tree and to his surprise found a magical golden goose inside it. The man gave him the goose as a repayment for his help. Amy returned home happily.

On his way, he met a beautiful princess and fell in love with her. “If you drink all the wine in my cellar, you may marry her,” said the king. Amy went to the strange man in the forest for help. That night, the man went to the cellar and secretly drank all the wine. Then the king said, “I want you to find a ship that can sail both on land and water.” Once again the man helped Amy build such a ship. At last the king had to agree to marry the princess and Amy.
