Inedia (Latin for 'fasting') or breatharianism is the claimed ability for a person to live without consuming food, and in some cases water.
In Book VII of Pliny the Elder's "Naturalis Historia", Pliny (quoting Megasthenes) gives the following description of a tribe of India:
At the very extremity of India, on the eastern side, near the source of the river Ganges, is the nation of the Astomi, a people who have no mouth; their bodies are rough and hairy, and they cover themselves with down plucked from the leaves of trees. These people survive only by breathing and the odors they inhale through their nostrils. They don't sustain themselves with food or drink; when they go on a long journey, they only take with them various odorous roots and flowers and wild apples, so that they don't run out of something to smell. But one smell, a little stronger than normal, easily destroys them.
Pliny the Elder (23–79 AD) was a Roman author, naturalist, and naval and military commander. He is best known for his monumental work, "Naturalis Historia", a 37-volume encyclopedia that covers a vast array of subjects, including natural history, geography, astronomy, art, and medicine.
