Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān (رضي الله عنه) said:

إِنَّ الْحَقَّ ثَقِيلٌ، وَهُوَ مَعَ ثِقَلِهِ مَرِيءٌ، وَإِنَّ الْبَاطِلَ خَفِيفٌ، وَهُوَ مَعَ خِفَّتِهِ وَبِيءٌ. وَتَرْك الْخَطِيئَةِ أَيْسَرُ - أَوْ قَالَ خَيْرٌ - مِنْ طَلَبِ التَّوْبَةِ، وَرُبَّ شَهْوَةِ سَاعَةٍ أَوْرَثَتْ حُزْنًا طَوِيلًا.

“Indeed, the truth is heavy, yet despite its weight, it is beneficial. And falsehood is light, yet despite its lightness, it is harmful. Abandoning sin is easier—or he said, better—than seeking repentance. And how many fleeting desires have left behind prolonged sorrow.”

“A man came to Abū Yazīd al-Bustāmī and said: ‘Advise me.’

He replied:

انظر إلى السماء، فإن من خلقها مطلع عليك حيثما كنت، فاحذره.

‘Look at the sky, for the One who created it is watching over you wherever you are, so beware of Him.’”

Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī (رحمه الله) said:

“لا يصبر عن شهوات الدُّنْيا؛ إلّا مَن كان في قلبِهِ ما يشغله من الآخِرة.”

“No one can abstain from the desires of this world except the one whose heart is occupied with concerns for the Hereafter.”
