Apple, Nvidia, Anthropic, and other major tech companies have been accused of using YouTube videos to train their AI models without the consent of the content creators.

An investigation by Proof News found that these companies have utilized subtitles from over 173,000 YouTube videos, siphoned from more than 48,000 channels, to train their AI systems.

The dataset, called “YouTube Subtitles,” contains transcripts from educational channels like Khan Academy and MIT, as well as videos from media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and the BBC.

The subtitle files were part of a larger dataset named ‘The Pile,’ compiled by EleutherAI and made accessible to anyone with sufficient computing power. While EleutherAI performed the downloads, companies like Apple used the dataset, potentially violating YouTube’s terms and conditions, which prohibit harvesting materials without permission.

The investigation also revealed that content from popular YouTube creators, including MrBeast, Marques Brownlee, Jacksepticeye, and PewDiePie, was used for AI training.
