PENNY was unaware that the man he pinned died in police custody. In fact, in this interview, they never once mentioned the gravity of the situation.

Detective MEDINA allegedly lies not even a minute in. MEDINA claims to be a former Marine, even going as far as to get the ink to back up his claim. This is to get PENNY'S guard down as part of social bonding during interrogations.
