Otto Skorzeny’s funeral was held in Madrid in 1975. The ceremony was attended by former Waffen-SS members and notable figures of the era. Among the attendees was Reinhard Gehlen, a key figure in Wehrmacht military intelligence during the war and later known for his post-war intelligence activities.

During the ceremony, some attendees wore old uniforms and performed specific salutes, which drew attention. Skorzeny’s remains were transferred to Vienna after the Madrid ceremony and interred in his family’s burial site.

German ideologues embraced Atatürk’s strong leadership model as a successful example of how a single authoritative figure could unite and transform a nation.

In the National Socialist framework, Atatürk represented a symbol of “rebirth” and independence through his powerful leadership. The Germans believed that Atatürk had succeeded in modernizing his nation without becoming dependent on the West, which resonated with their own aspirations for national pride and independence. Furthermore, Turkey’s rapid secularization and significant changes in education and legal systems were closely monitored by German ideologists and were seen as evidence of the success of the modernization process.
