April 25 - International DNA day!
Here is a brief history of the discovery of DNA :
It is no exaggeration to say that the discovery of the structure of DNA was one of the greatest discoveries in biological science. 10 Nobel Prizes for such discoveries are rare. Francis Crick, James Watson and Maurice Wilkins won the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1962 for this discovery.
If we look at the history of the discovery of the structure of DNA, Watson and Crick would never have known that DNA is a double helix without the experiments of Mrs. Rosalind Franklin. Rosalind Franklin was the first to take an X-ray image of the DNA molecule. The results of his scientific research led Watson and Crick to conclude that DNA is in double helix form. This scientific conclusion was made in 1953. Rosalind Franklin was alive at this time.
But by 1956, problems with Mrs. Franklin's health began to appear. A tumor appears and enlarges in the part of his abdomen. She can't even wear her regular skirt. He will have to lie on the operating table in September of this year. Two large tumors are found in his abdomen. After the surgery, Franklin is a bit withdrawn from scientific work. His family members and friends will give him spiritual encouragement. One of the authors who discovered that DNA is a double helix, Francis Crick and his wife, Rosalind, were close friends of Franklin and greatly supported his return to scientific research.
After returning to work, Franklin conducts research on the polio virus. But his health deteriorates again. On April 16, 1958, Mrs. Franklin died of bronchopneumonia and ovarian cancer. It is concluded that his long work in the laboratory under X-ray light caused his death. Despite her invaluable contribution to the discovery of the DNA double helix, Mrs. Franklin was not awarded the Nobel Prize.
The reason for this is not because Crick and Watson stole Franklin's scientific works and presented scientific conclusions in their name, as many people think, but because according to the Nobel statute, this award is not given to those who have died. I believe that if Rosalind Franklin had lived before 1962, we would be reading in our textbooks today that "Watson, Crick and Franklin discovered that DNA is a double helix."
