اكثر ما يميز كيارستمي هي العفوية في صناعة الأفلام ، كإنه يلتقط الكاميرا ويطلب من الممثلين التصرف على نحو طبيعي كما يفعلون في الحياة العادية … حتى الحوارات يضعها قبل فترات وجيزة من التصوير ، كيارستمي يرى أن تصرف الممثل على طبيعته واستخدام كلماته يكون ذو وقع اكبر على المتلقي
“ذا أردت أن تعمل مع ممثلین هواة، غیر محترفین، فعلیك أن تكون واضحًا.. لا تعطهم أبداً جملة یلفظونها أمام الكامیرا. لا شيء سوف یحدث. یجب أن تجعلهم یؤمنون بالحوار إلى حد كاٍف”

“الأفلام التي لا تتضمن قصًة ما، لا تكون رائجة جداً عند الجمهور.. هذه حقیقة. مع ذلك، فالقصة أیضًا
تحتاج إلى فجوات، ثغرات، مساحات خالیة كالتي نجدها في أحجیة الكلمات المتقاطعة.. الفراغات التي ینبغي على الجمهور أن یملأها، أن یضیف إلیها التفاصیل الضروریة، أو أن یكتشفها.. كما یفعل التحري الخاص في الأفلام البولیسية”
