23 million Americans poisoned by forever chemicals due to badly treated wastewater

A new study shows that nearly 7% of Americans are exposed to harmful amounts of forever chemicals through treated municipal water. 23 million people are consuming these toxic compounds in their drinking water, according to the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Turns out the wastewater treatment facilities fail to effectively remove PFAS from their purified water streams, which ultimately reenter municipal drinking water networks. These treatment systems’ — which resemble those serving about 70 percent of the US population —maximum efficiency rate for removing organofluorines is less than 25 percent.
