I don't think Fr Ted had any meaningful impact on the church. The show started in '95 & the Clerical Sexual Abuse scandals had been going on for 7 or 8 years, at that stage.
Unfortunately, the Church itself was to blame for what happened. Even if the media had a field day, it was individual priests, mostly predatory homosexuals of the knd who hang around Pride parades these days, as well as the cover-ups that the bishops engaged in, which destroyed it's reputation.
Nobody hated Ted, Dougal or Jack, once they had become household names, they hated what real-life priests had done to innocent children, a crime which was almost exceeded by the bishops' refusal to do the right thing, when the crimes of these homosexuals came to light.
The Church shot itself in the foot, then the other foot, then in the head & it's now engaged in a disgusting display of subservience to Wokery, Mass Migration & even War.
My local church had the Ukraine flag flying for a while, even though the display of any flag, apart from the Irish tricolour & the Papal Flag, is prohibited at any Catholic Church premises.
