ISW: Russian forces likely capture Pervomayske, southwest of Avdiivka

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on 9 April that Russian forces recently advanced west of Avdiivka and likely captured Pervomayske, southwest of Avdiivka.

Pervomayske is located close to the city of Avdiivka, which the Russians captured in February of this year, continuing to advance in the villages around Avdiivka.

According to ISW, geolocated footage published on 9 April shows elements of the Russian 9th Motorized Rifle Brigade raising a flag in western Pervomayske.

Other Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian forces have not yet fully captured Pervomayske. However, another geolocated footage published on 9 April shows Russian forces advanced in fields northeast of Netaylove, west of Pervomayske.

British ministry: Russia aims to recruit 400,000 contract soldiers in 2024

The British Defense Ministry reported on 10 April Russia seeks to recruit around 400,000 contract service personnel in 2024.

Russia aimed at sustaining its forces in Ukraine, which have suffered significant losses, and supporting Russia’s announced plans to increase the size of its armed forces to 1.32 million this year and 1.5 million subsequently, according to the British Defense Ministry.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced during a press conference with Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Kyiv in early April that Russia plans to mobilize an additional 300,000 soldiers in June.

General Staff: Russian losses exceed 450,000 troops

In its daily report, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces marked on 10 April the milestone of Russian losses, which have exceeded 450,000 in personnel losses since the beginning of its full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022.

This number includes 830 casualties Russian forces suffered just over the past day.

An attack on Russian-occupied Lysychansk in Luhansk Oblast killed 28 people, according to Moscow-installed authorities. They claimed the Ukrainian army shelled a city restaurant with HIMARS, and all the victims were civilians.

Ukraine has not officially commented on the incident. However, according to Ukrainian military bloggers, around 30 high-ranking Russian military officers were present in the restaurant at the time of the strike.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow expects “immediate unconditional condemnation” of this shelling from international organizations.

Lysychansk is located near the frontlines. Before the full-scale Russian invasion, around 111,000 people lived in the city.

Russia occupied Lysychansk in summer 2022 after intense fighting.

Russian sabotage group attempts border breach in northern Ukraine

On 3 February, a Russian sabotage group attempted to breach Ukraine’s northern border in Sumy Oblast, reported Ukraine’s Joint Forces Commander Lt-Gen Serhii Naiev. 

Russian forces daily shell border regions of northern Ukraine. They also employ sabotage groups, which clash with Ukrainian border guards. However, according to Ukrainian commanders, there has been no major Russian troop buildup in that area.

Per Naiev, there were 10 armed Russians. Ukrainian border guards opened small arms and mortar fire on them, also calling for reinforcements. The Russians then changed tactics, splitting into two groups.
