Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

“And here we see the condition of Umar bin al-Khattab رضي الله عنه. On one occasion he recited the chapter of At-Tur until he reached the verse:

“Indeed, the punishment of your Lord will come to pass." (At-Tur:7)

It caused him to weep, and his weeping became so severe that he fell ill, and people began to visit him due to his illness.

He would recite his daily portion of the Qur'ān through the night sometimes and pass by a particular verse and it would affect him, so he would remain in his house for days until the people would visit him because they thought he was ill.

He had two visible black lines under his eyes from the effects of crying."

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه said,

“Do not scatter the Qur’ān as if it were dates falling from a tree, nor recite quickly as if it were poetry. Stop at its verses that amaze you and let it move your hearts. Let not your concern be reaching the end of the surah.”

[Akhlaaq Hamalat al-Quran]

Abū Madīnah Al-Dārimī رضي الله عنه reports, “When two of the Companions of Allāh’s Messenger – Allāh’s peace and blessings be upon him – would meet, they would not part until one would recite to the other

“By time, verily man is in loss…”
(Sūrah Al-‘Asr).

Then, one of them would say salām to the other.”

[Al-Tabarānī in Al-Awsat]Shaykh Al-Albānī graded its chain of transmission sahīh. Al-Sahīhah, hadīth 2648.

Some of the Pious Predecessors (Salaf) would say: "The Qur'ān was revealed to be implemented, but people took its recitation as the implementation."

يا صاحب القرآن

O' companion of The Qur'ān

انت في طريق ينتهي

You are treading such a path

بصوت المنادي يوم القيامة

Which ends with the sound of a caller on the Day of Qiyamah:

این اهل الله و خاصته؟

Where are Ahlullah and His chosen ones?

جاهد ان لا يكون مكانك فراغا حينها

Strive now so that you're not deprived then

فذلك الخسران المبين

For that is definitely a great loss

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

‎“The Qur’ān revives the heart the way water gives life to the Earth.”
