Continued….. Genius logic, General! It's comforting to know that Western leaders hold such profound, world-altering wisdom, as African Stream's Ahmed Ghoneim (@ahmed.ghoneim.official) breaks down in the latest episode of 'Africa in 90.'

Continued….. While some sections of South Africa, especially the business elite, have welcomed the new unity government, others are opposed to it. Those include the anti-imperialist Marxist-Leninist Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party (@effsouthafrica), which, from the onset, had made it clear it would not join any government that included the DA and the right-wing Freedom Front Plus (FF+).

However, as EFF President Julius Malema (@julius.sello.malema on Instagram and @Julius_S_Malema on Twitter) explained a few days ago, the EFF's opposition to the new unity government has to do with its opposition to white supremacy than white people.

Take a look and let us know what you think.

Continued…. Community anger has prompted some to resort to violence - with a number of local police motorbikes and other vehicles vandalised in protest. That’s triggered debate on whether such ‘violent’ methods of resistance are justified.

In this clip, Atlanta’s Mary Hooks (@maryhooks) - an organiser for the Movement for Black Lives - passionately argues that the answer is yes. While admitting it’s not a risk she’s willing to take herself, she ‘blesses’ those who do, arguing vandalism and arson are legitimate when other means of meaningful opposition have been closed off.

Hear her out and please let us know your views on this issue.

Continued….. It’s a case that’s sparked widespread outrage, with human rights groups, Congress members, Pope Francis and the Dalai Lama among those calling for his release. There are claims affidavits were falsified for the trial and government prosecutors withheld critical evidence that would’ve been favourable to Peltier.

His lawyer, Moira “Mo” Meltzer-Cohen, said Peltier had always maintained his innocence ‘despite him knowing that a throated admission of guilt would very likely spell freedom for him.’

This Tiktok post by indigenous content creator, Che Jim, sums up the grave sense of injustice.

Continued…. Returning to Jamaica, he embraced the struggles of the marginalised and connected with students and the working poor through his teachings and community engagement. His ability to bridge the gap between intellectuals and the masses was met with government surveillance and eventual expulsion from Jamaica. This sparked widespread riots and cemented his radical legacy.

Throughout his life, Rodney remained dedicated to the cause of social justice, forging alliances with intellectuals, including Rastafarian leaders and Black-power activists. Notably, his impact extended to figures such as Ralph Gonsalves, who now serves as the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

After his expulsion from Jamaica, Rodney returned to Tanzania, where he played a key role in the Dar Es Salaam school of intellectual inquiry. There, he completed his magnum opus, "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa," which continues to provoke passionate debates among historians and Pan-Africanists today.

Tragically, his life was cut short when he was killed by a car bomb in 1980, leaving behind a legacy of courage, intellectual astuteness and a commitment to social transformation. 30,000 showed up to send him off at his funeral, illustrating how dearly he was held by the people.

Rest in Power Walter Rodney.

Continued…. The court ruled that buying cobalt in the global supply chain did not amount to “participation in a venture,” and there was no proof that the tech giants had anything more than a buyer-seller relationship with suppliers or had the power to stop the use of child labour.

Cobalt is in high demand as competition for market leadership in Electric Vehicle sales kicks into high gear. Nearly two-thirds of the world’s cobalt is mined in DR Congo. The country has 2-million artisanal miners working under horrible conditions, according to DelveDatabase, an online database. Four critical minerals - copper, nickel, cobalt and lithium - will generate $16 trillion in the next 25 years, according to the IMF.

DR Congo’s vast wealth is the key reason for the country’s long history of exploitation and conflict - from Belgian King Leopold II running the country as his private estate to Western tech firms churning out high-end goods using Congolese minerals.

Help raise awareness of the exploitation of Congolese children by sharing this video widely.

Continued…. However, his normalisation and peace deal with Israel after the Arab–Israeli War remains controversial topic among African and Arabs alike.

Listen to Nasser’s TV interview in 1967 where he spells out, in no uncertain terms, his take on Israel and the US, just before the conflict broke out.

Continued….. About 1,000 protesters had stormed the Brooklyn Museum that day to demand prominent institutions like the museum divest from Israel, which has klled more than 36,000 Palestinians with a military onslaught and escalated siege since 7 October. Some demonstrators had attempted to set up a tent encampment in the museum’s lobby while others unfurled a ‘Free Palestine: Divest from Gn*cide’ banner from the rooftop of the city’s second-largest museum. Recordings also showed police brutality against demonstrators, including Within Our Lifetime: United for Palestine organiser, Nerdeen Kiswani (@nerdeen_kiswani), whose hijab (Muslim head covering) came off while police tackled her to the ground.

NAIROBI CELEBRATES AFRICAN LIBERATION DAY 2024

Some of the African Stream team took part in a special Pan-African event in Nairobi to mark 2024’s African Liberation Day (25th May).

There was music, as well as speeches and shows of solidarity through song. Legendary figures like Kwame Nkrumah, Amílcar Cabral and Patrice Lumumba loomed large in our thoughts as we discussed and planned for the final liberation of the motherland.

Here are some of the highlights from what was by all accounts a great day. How did you spend it?
