The polls above should demonstrate how democracy is not inherently good. In fact, because I have a realistic view of the depravity of humanity, I think democracy will likely end in disaster in most cases.

As I read through "The Open Society and Its Enemies," the book that laid the foundation for modern day liberalism, I'm more convinced of the shaky foundation that liberal democracies are based on.

In his book, Karl Popper explains how liberal societies should adopt relativism to prevent authoritarian leaders from gaining popularity and thus destroying the "open (liberal) society."

He explains how if truth, justice, and morality are objectively true, a strong leader can come along and appeal to these things in order to gain power. For example, Trump can say "abortion is objectively immoral and should be stopped by any means. Give me power, and I will reinstate morality to this nation." At this point, what 51% of people think is irrelevant because there's an authority (truth, morality, God, justice, etc.) outside of humanity that governs society, and we simply need a leader to enact these objective realities.

In other words, democracy thrives on ignorance and relativism because if there are objective truths, we don't need 51% of people to vote for the truth to be truthful or morals to be moral; all we need to do is implement them, either democratically or not.
