Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has funded a major universal basic income (UBI) study through OpenResearch, a lab affiliated with OpenAI.

This experiment involved distributing $45 million to 3,000 participants over three years. Participants from Texas and Illinois were randomly selected to receive either $1,000 or $50 monthly stipends.

The study aimed to assess how a regular, unconditional allowance might impact participants’ behaviors and choices. This aligns with Altman’s belief that UBI could address potential job losses due to advancements in artificial intelligence.

During the study, extensive data was collected through surveys, interviews, and even blood samples. Initial findings reveal that recipients primarily used the funds for basic needs, medical care, and supporting others.

Elizabeth Rhodes, the study’s director, emphasizes that the research is designed to provide data for informed decision-making rather than to prescribe specific solutions.

OpenResearch plans to release more detailed findings on various topics, including the effects on children, mobility, crime, and politics. The organization also hopes to make its de-identified data set publicly available for further analysis.
