Bloy's response to a 1913 literature questionnaire, "Do you think today that [the French Academy] would accept a Flaubert or a Baudelaire?"
"Not only would it not accept a Flaubert or Baudelaire, but it would plot to prevent them from being able to pay their debts, reducing them to the bleakest of famines, and it would overwhelm with its oldest favors the most fetid Rosand or Hanotaux that it could unearth."

I added the following previously but it’s worth presenting it again for new subscribers who might have missed it. It’s a rare essay on the role of “nemesis” in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. The reason this is important is because it’s almost never even noticed by readers or commentators of the text, and the word “nemesis” itself is often mistranslated with less instructive words like (mere) “vengeance,” “wrath,” etc translators of the text — and be aware of that same problem in other authors, most notably Herodotus (often you have to use a digital archive, such as Perseus etc, of the original Greek manuscripts and do a search for the Greek word for “nemesis”)
