They are selling our dreams. As I was so excited to finally graduate and begin a new chapter of my life at Harvard, I failed to notice how my future was being taken away from me. My home became a home for matchmakers a.k.a sovchilar in Uzbek. These individuals, behind the name of culture and tradition, offered me to marry their son that studies in America or their businessman cousin.

But what unsettled me the most was not merely the audacity of their proposals, but how easy they got access to the most intimate information about me that should have been kept secret and safe. Where did these people get my address, my phone number or even the information about my family? The answer, that I soon got from them, was in my own school.

My acceptance to Harvard and Princeton and a mention of my school in many popular Uzbek media made it very easy for people to find my school, then my address, phone number, etc.

And we all know that my experience is only a drop in the ocean. We all know how private data of young girls are getting leaked or even sold in educational institutions. This is betrayal. When they sell our phone number, they are selling our dreams. They are selling our rights. They are selling our trust in education. They are selling our belief in a place where we, girls, can learn and excel.

The consequences of such privacy violations extend far beyond the trauma and unfinished degree. Arranged and early marriages, combined with social expectations of getting married early, are some of the most serious ones. When a majority of my classmates are getting married, are in arranged marriages or were engaged in 16, I refuse to hold on to these “traditions and cultures.” One should not wonder about disturbing statistics of number of early marriages, rape cases, domestic violences when we even cannot keep a girl’s phone number private.

In the end I wonder if there is or wish there were legal consequences of institutions failing to uphold data privacy standards. This is a violation of human rights. This is a continuation of gender inequality. My dreams are not worth 50k sums.@guzelwrites

He went to a PhD program. She had her second child.
He became a Dr. She was still a wife and a mother.
