Federal judge orders SEC to pay $1.8 million in legal fees in Debt Box case, dismissing the case without prejudice

In July 2023, the SEC filed a complaint against Debt Box, accusing it of “defrauding investors of at least $49 million.”

The federal judge, however, previously criticized the SEC in a March filing, particularly on the agency’s conduct in getting the temporary restraining order, which included an asset freeze and a court-appointed receiver to assume control of the company.

In April, two SEC lawyers, who were heading the case against Debt Box, reportedly resigned after the Utah judge said the case was “marred by false statements and misrepresentations.”

A U.S. federal judge ordered the SEC to pay about $1.8 million in legal fees to Debt Box and dismissed case against Debt Box without prejudice.

The Securities and Exchange Commission signed off on ether ETF proposals Thursday, bringing their potential launches one step closer.

The US securities regulator approved 19b-4 proposals submitted by the Cboe, NYSE Arca and Nasdaq exchanges “on an accelerated basis,” according to a notice posted on the agency’s website just after 5 pm ET.

Those three exchanges seek to list spot ether ETFs by VanEck, Ark Invest, BlackRock, Fidelity, Franklin Templeton, Bitwise, Grayscale and Invesco.
