চা-শ্রমিকদের মজুরি মেটানোর জন্য ভিন্ন ধরনের মুদ্রার প্রচলন করেছিল ব্রিটিশ বণিকেরা, যা প্রচলিত মুদ্রার বাজার থেকে ছিল একেবারেই আলাদা। মজুরি হিসেবে চা-শ্রমিকদের এই মুদ্রা দেওয়া হতো।এইসব মুদ্রার সরকারি স্বীকৃতি ছিল না বলে এগুলোকে টোকেন বা কুপন বলা হয়। টোকেন-পদ্ধতি চালুর পেছনে একটি বিশেষ কারণ ছিল। কঠোর পরিশ্রম, বৈরী পরিবেশ আর অতি নিম্ন মজুরির কারণে শ্রমিকেরা প্রায়ই বাগান থেকে পালিয়ে যেতে চাইতেন। অনেক সময় স্বজনদের দেখতে মন চাইলেও যাওয়ার উপায় ছিল না। কারণ টোকেনের বিপরীতে বাগানের ভেতরের নির্ধারিত দোকান থেকেই শুধু পণ্য কেনা যেত। বিনিময়মূল্য হিসেবে সরকার প্রচলিত মুদ্রা প্রাপ্তির কোনো সুযোগ ছিল না। আর বাগানের বাইরে এসব টোকেনের কোনো মূল্য ছিল না। ফলে শ্রমিকেরা চাইলেও বাগান ত্যাগ করতে পারতেন না।
