SUNSPOT NUMBERS AT A 20-YEAR HIGH: For the second month in a row, the monthly-average sunspot number is cruising toward a 20-year high. The current value, around 230, would eclipse every month since Sept. 2001, which occured during the peak of old Solar Cycle 23. The current cycle (Solar Cycle 25) was not supposed to be this strong, and it may become even stronger before Solar Max is finished.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G1): Wednesday's X1-class solar flare from sunspot AR3784 hurled a faint CME directly toward Earth. Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible when it arrives. A NOAA model predicts Aug. 18th; NASA's model leans more toward Aug. 17th.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G2): NOAA forecasters say that G2-class geomagnetic storms are possible on May 31st when a CME is expected to graze Earth's magnetic field. It was hurled into space by an X1.4-flare on May 29th. This forecast is uncertain. NOAA's model predicts a stiff glancing blow, while NASA's model suggests a near miss.
