The attack quickly reached the forward positions without the loss of a single tank and drove toward the east. After achieving this breakthrough, Wünsche wasted no time attempting to destroy Soviet defensive positions. Instead, he pushed his battalion into the depths of the Soviet defenses, with the intention of destroying the Soviet artillery. The speed of the attack evidently took the Soviet artillerymen by surprise. When the German tanks appeared suddenly out of a nearby valley, the Russians were still in the process of pulling their artillery out of their emplacements. Suddenly, HE shells started raining among the Soviet artillery.

After destroying the Soviet artillery, Wünsche then turned back to destroy the enemy infantry, who was already engaged by grenadiers. Masses of fleeing Soviet infantry, already demoralized by the tank assault, abandoned the main defensive line. To their horror, these doomed men saw Wünsche's Panzers racing back toward them from the rear. Defenseless against the Wünsche's Panzers, the panic stricken Soviets scattered in all directions, with tanks in pursuit.

After the battle ended, Soviets had lost 900 soldiers and 40 artillery guns. Wünsche casaulties included 5 KIA and 14 WIA. He was awarded knight cross.
