I was listening to a short 2-minute UK 🇬🇧 news broadcast about Pavel Durov, the Founder of Telegram, who was arrested in France 🇫🇷 a few days ago.

Listening from a linguistic point of view was interesting. In my view, it sounded somewhat loaded, so I grabbed a pen. 🖊️

For example, they mentioned Russia, 🇷🇺 in relation to it being a country of nefarious criminal dealings, 5 times. They also managed to squeeze in “right” and “far right” 5 times.

The word “potential” in terms of facts about what Paval was said to have done was used 4 times. The word “probably” was also used in relation to the accusations.

The words “encrypted private” and “privacy” was mentioned 4 times and twice respectively in a “tut tut” kind of way so far as I heard it.

Words and language are very powerful in shaping our minds, thoughts and opinions.

The emphasis with which we say things also tells a story and conveys an unconscious message. Their pronunciation of the word “Russia” and the word “privacy” was very interesting. The emphasis was placed on the emotive words of the day; Russia, riots, far right, and criminal activity.

They seem to use the opposite approach to my grammar check, which pulls me up if I keep on using the same words over and over again. The grammar software suggests alternatives so that I am not repeating myself. 🔁

The repeating of the same words and phrases is almost hypnotic 😵‍💫 and when you find a short mantra and stick with it, people will often believe it regardless of whether it’s true.

According to a podcast by the Economist, posted 4 yesterday, Telegram “isn’t as secure as people think it is.” If that is correct, that sounds like a contradiction in terms because the highly secure nature is cited as one of the problems. They also say it is one place people can get true news about what is happening in the Ukraine. Tom, the podcaster said Telegram is used by the Ukraine military.

It looks like Pavel has now been charged for the actions of Telegram users. What I find intriguing is that I can’t think of ANY governments who hold themselves accountable for the crimes they have committed, or the crimes committed by their staff, on their watch. If this is the new precedent, I look forward to seeing more high level heads roll. Shall we start with thalidomide, the infected blood scandal, the illegal sale of our information, censoring information this past 4 years that could have potentially saved lives, Jimmy Saville, the Post Office scandal, and the Windrush scandal, because in all the aforementioned cases, people were either hurt, subjected to criminal acts, or died.

PS: Has anyone identified who is on the Epstein tapes yet? The authorities have had that information for YEARS yet NOTHING has been done, so I would suggest it is not just about access to the data because even when actual facts and hard evidence is presented, it often goes nowhere (depending upon who you are), so I hope they are putting as much focus on the information they already have.
