🇷🇴🤝🇸🇾 Syrian state medias report that a high ranking member of the Romanian intelligence services met with with Syrian president, Bashar al Assad and his spy chief, Hossam Luke in Damascus very recently.

The topic of the meeting was the issue of Syrian migrants coming into the European Union and the Romanian spy was also talking on behalf of the Greek, Cypriot and Italian governments who share worries about irregular migration.

In 2022, American magazine, Foreign Policy, was reporting on a change of heart in Austria, Hungary, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Poland about the EU's stance on the Assad regime which is that of mass sanctions and non-cooperation.

The magazine went as far as to say that some of these countries were working to evade the sanctions and support the regime of Bashar al Assad arguing that Assad has won the civil war and the emphasis was on reconstruction and returning Syria to a sense of normalcy which should put an end to the masses of Syrians and Lebanese that flee towards Southern Europe and encourage those that came to Europe to return to their homes.

It is worth noting that Bulgaria, Greece and Hungary have a chargé d'affaires active in Damascus since 2020, Cyprus has reactivated its embassy in 2021, meanwhile Italy, Austria and Poland have kept some form of contact past 2018.

🇷🇴⛏⚡️ For the first time in a decade, the European Union will open a magnesium mine in Romania

Mining company, Verde Magnesium, with its headquarters in Bucharest but financially supported by the American investment fund, Amerocap will be spending 1 billion USD to restart operations in an abandoned magnesium mine in Budureasa, close to Oradea.

The European Union imports 90% of its magnesium from China. Magnesium is used for aluminium alloys, die-casting, removing sulfur in the production of steel and some car, aircraft and aerospace manufacturers used magnesium alloys to craft key engine components. Magnesium is also important for electronics being used in laptops, computer parts, smartphones, tablets, videocameras etc.

The company wants to start magnesium extraction by 2027 and reach 90k tons/year or 50% of the EU's consumption or 9% of the global consumption and all from a single mine in Romania.

🇷🇺🤝🇲🇩 Russia has lifted the restrictions on agricultural imports from Gagauzia.

How will this be implemented is unclear because Gagauzian agricultural products do not carry a special packaging citing "Gagauzia" as an origin. All products made in Gagauzia are labeled as "Moldovan".

Russia is treating Gagauzia like if it its an independent country, to show the support which Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials promised, support which won't manifest really.

🇲🇩📄⚡️Moldovan authorities have begun the work on the 2024 census.

For the next 4 months, surveyors will be knocking at the homes of people seeking to find out the relevant data like names, ages, how many people live in the household, employment, marital status, ethnicity, religious background etc.

It is unclear whether or not the separatists in Transnistria will cooperate with Chișinău in this census.

Unionist voices have called for the Moldovans who hold Romanian citizenship to declare themselves as Romanian this census and abandon the notion of “Moldovan identity”.

Definitely looking forward for the full data to see how many people does Moldova still have and see if the ethnic composition of the country has changed much since 2014 when the last census was conducted.
