Just a Few Anecdotes from the Ivies.

Just so happened that all my American life -- more than forty years of it -- is connected with Ivy League schools. BA from Columbia, Ph.D. from Yale. Taught for more than ten years at Yale, and now more than that at another similar school, plus spent three years at one of the finest small liberal colleges. So here are a few stories, which are just anecdotes, of course, but I believe, they are rather revealing.

1. At college some kids wrote a lot of anti-Chinese slurs on the stone gates. Noise, agitation, anger. Turned out, they were Chinese Americans, who wanted to attract attention to the anti-Chinese prejudices.

2. At Columbia, attending very popular class on Shakespeare --taught at the Hamilton Hall, if I am not mistaken--the one the students like to occupy. So one student asks another -- who is Aeschylus? No clue, answered the first. And Columbia actually requires students to take so called CC classes -- core curriculum on contemporary civilization. And by the way. After years of trying, I've learned one thing: never mention Cervantes or Don Quixote anywhere. These names draw the biggest blank I've ever seen. And the attempts to remedy the situation derail all my class plans.

3. At Yale, Hillel students invited a bunch of professors, myself including, to comment on "Kosovo and moral responsibility." Only I and my former teacher and colleague, a Holocaust survivor, were against war and bombing of Serbia. The rest demanding blood, because it was our moral responsibility to interfere.

4. And the icing on the cake. At my current school, I got money from the university to offer a new course, which I called "Dissent from Socrates to Snowden." All colleagues and deans, many of whom were clearly old time lefties, when they saw this course advertised, told me that I would get tons of students. That's what I expected as well. I ended up with four. And I am not a bad or boring teacher, as seen by other classes. But the class was too demanding, with reading of Jesus and Spinoza, let alone some crazy Russians and Chinese.

All that was a while ago, since then the schools 1. Became more like corporations. 2. Per capita income of the students who get to Ivies, had skyrocketed. 3. They are brilliant kids, many of them with good heart. But the way to get into Ivies is not to dissent. I didn’t witness any data to prove me wrong. In fact, from what I remember, there is no a single humanity discipline in the top ten concentrations. Not even economics or history.
When a friend of mine asked me to give a lecture on Russia and Ukraine at more simple school, I was shocked by the curiosity of the kids, many of whom worked and served in the army. Over here, very rarely do I get a open question. They already know all there is to know from NPR and NYT.

"And it isn’t just stuff you’ve posted after the new law comes into force you can get into trouble for – oh, no – but anything you’ve posted, ever, dating back to the dawn of the internet. In other words, it’s a gold-embossed invitation to offence archaeologists to do their worst, with the prospect of a $20,000 reward if they hit paydirt. The only way to protect yourself is to go through all your social media accounts and painstakingly delete anything remotely controversial you’ve ever said....
"If the courts believe you are likely to commit a ‘hate crime’ or disseminate ‘hate propaganda’ (not defined), you can be placed under house arrest and your ability to communicate with others restricted. That is, a court can force you to wear an ankle bracelet, prevent you using any of your communication devices and then instruct you not to leave the house. If the court believes there’s a risk you may get drunk or high and start tweeting under the influence – although how is unclear, given you can’t use your phone or a PC – it can order you to submit regular urine samples to the authorities. Anyone who refuses to comply with these diktats can be sent to prison."
